THOMAS W.
BRIGHT, OF ELK, WEST VIRGINIA.
STOVEPlPE-THIMBLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1'7, 1906.
Application filed August 10,1905. Serial No. 273,570.
To all/Z whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS W. BRIGHT, a a bear squarely against citizen of the United States, residing at Elk, l
in the county of Tucker and State of WVest edges 4 of the extension and are adapted to the outer face of the chimney, thereby not only to limit the insertion of the thimble within the thimbleopen Virginia, have invented a new and useful ing, but also operate to form a tight juncture Stovepipe Thimble, of which the following is a specification.
M This invention relates to Stovepipe-thim- The object of the invention is to provide a thimble adapted to be located at the angle or corner of a chimney instead of on the side, as usual, whereby where the chimney is located in the center of a building and its corners protrude within each of four rooms on the same floor an efficient connection of each of the rooms may be had with the chimney.
With the above and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction and combination of parts of a stove-pipe thimble, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a view in horizontal section of a chimney, showing the manner in which the thimble 18 combined with one cor- I ner thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective detail view of the thimble.
The thimble 1 may be made of any suitable material, such as terra-cotta or cast metal, and is provided at its inner end, or that which will extend into the chimney, with an angular rabbet, the edges 2 of which are at right angles to each other and are adapted to lie flush with the inner walls of the chimney C, as shown in Fig. 1. The outer end of the thimble, or that which will be disposed exteriorly of the chimney, has its sides truncated, forming thereby an angular extension 3, the edges 1 of which are disposed at right angles to each other and parallel with the edges 2 and are adapted to lie flush with the outer walls of the chimney. The extension is provided with a marginal flange 5, the inner edges 6 of which are disposed parallel with the outer therewith, and thus preclude entrance of moisture to the room in which the thimble is located. As shown in ig. 2, the exterior surface of the body of the thimble is convex from end to end to cause it to take a firmer hold upon the cement or plaster which is used for securin the thimble in place. The inner surface of t e thimble is cylindrical.
By the provision of the rabbet 2 when the thimble is positioned in the chimney there will be no projecting portions on the inner side thereof, which would be objectionable as resenting surfaces upon which soot could odge, and by the provision of the angular extension the outer end of the thimble is caused to conform to the walls of the chimney, and thereby obviate the presentation of a rotuberance that would be unsightly and objectionable. The inner edges 6 of the flange are also of importance, inasmuch as by their provision not only as above pointed out is the admission of moisture to the room pre vented, but a neat and finished appearance is given to the article, which greatly enhances its value.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- A stovepipe-thiinble having its inner surface cylindrical and its outer surface convex from end to end, said thimble being provided with an angular rabbet in one end, and at its other end with an angular extension the edges of which are disposed at right angles to each other and parallel with the edges of the rabbet, and a flange extending laterally from the edges of the extension.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
' THOMAS W. BRIGHT.
I/Vitnesses J. H. JoorIUM, J12, M. O. AUERBAOH.
