a J.A.HENSBL.
GEILING OR WAINSGOTING BOARD.
No. 517,521. Patented Apr. 3, 1894.
WITNESSES: INVENTOH:
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. HENSEL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CEILING OR WAINSCOTING BOARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 517,521, dated April 3, 1894.
Application filed May 29, 1393- To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. HENsEL,a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Manufacture of Ceiling or Wainscoting Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in the manner of manufacturing ceiling or wainscoting material consisting of boards, in that a portion of the bead overlaps a portion of the adjoining board so as to cover up the joint between the boards and hide the opening formed by the shrinkage of the boards when in place; second, to thus save the artificial means of drying wainscoting material; third, so as to protect the bead from the blows of the hammer in nailing having its bead on the opposite edge from where it is nailed.
In the accompanying drawings similar letters refer to similar parts for illustration.
Figure 1 represents the end view of Wainscoting or wall-lining with tongue on one edge and groove on the other edge so as to interlock and show the object of the projection a, at a, which thus allows the shrinkage of the lumber the width of the projection a at a, without materially changing its appearance, said projection can be constructed of any size or contour to cover more or less of the adjoining board according to the dry quality of the lumber, a represents a semicircle or bead worked in a plane slightly lower than the surface of the board. 7 a
Fig. 2 represents a surface view of wainscoting when in place showing a at a in the form of abead or semicircle running the full Serial No. 475,889. (No model.)
length of the board and not projecting above the surface and thus safe from damage in shipping.
I am aware that wall lining has been made with a tongue, groove and bead previous to my invention but my improvementin ceiling or wainscoting material consisting of boards provided on one edge with a tongue and on the other edge with a groove, the upper corner of the board at its tongue end being cut away and the opposite corner at the groove end being similarly cut and formed with a head which projects beyond the edge, said bead lying in a plane lower than the surface of the board and adapted to overlap the cut away portion of the next adjoining board so as to cover up the joint between the board and hide the opening or crevice formed by the shrinkage of the boards when in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An improvement in ceiling or wainscoting material consisting of boards provided on one edge with a tongue a on the other edge with JOHN A. HENSEL.
