Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 10, 1906.
To @ZZ whom A may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD G. BUDD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seat- Frames, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates particularly `to that part of a. seat-frame known as the f seat end in the art for which the invention is especially adapted-i. e., the car-seat art ;l and niyobject is to provide a structure of this character which may be readily formed 01 stamped in sheet-steel or similar material, which shall have maximum strength and rigidity, which may, with its adjuncts, be easily assembled, and which shall be capable c of expression in symmetrical and 'ornamental form. l l
ln carrying out the invention in a preferred form l employ, generally speaking, an end plate or Upan, which may be provided with means for supporting and guiding. suitable seat and backcushions. Vith this is conibined a seat end formed, preferably, of' two generally parallel-pressed Isteef sheets secured together' and the outer 'one Aof which, paneled, n'namenterh or otherwise formed, incloses such end plate or pan, to which it is secured, thereby contributing to the strength and rigidity of the structure as a whole, hiding from view the bolt-heads, whichordinarily extend through the end. plate, and greatl` 'iinproving the ap pearanec ofthe device, dditionally said seat end is adapted to advantageously support an arm-rest, which may be of the saine material or of' wood, as desired.
'llie invention is illustrated in the aecompanying dra.vings, in which-- Figure l is an elevation of a seat end ein-v ploying my invention, Fig. 2 is a similar View of the reverse side thereof. Fig. -3 is a section on the line?) f, Fig. l.; and Figs. 4, 5, and (i are views corresponding to Figs. l, 2, and 3, but illustrating a modification.
Referring to said drawings, in which simi# lar-letters denote corresponding parts, A designates'the and plate or pan of a seat-frame adapted for use in a railway-car.. 'lhis may, if desired, be provided with the are-shaped guide e, enacting with the back-supporting arin, (not shown,) and rail-supports a u', co-
act-ing with the cusllion-carrying connectingrails e2 e2. The edges a of' said plate A are flanged inwardly, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The seat end is shown as formed in two sections, an outer section B and an inner section These may be of any suitable design, preferably one contriluiting both strength and grace to thc structure. The outer section is substantially rectangular in the present instance, both the horizontal edges b li and the vertical edges b2 b being flanged inwardlyr at right angles to the body, as best seen in Figs. 2 and il. This section is shown as provided with a panel li* and with an opening b, its edges adjacent to said opening being flanged inwardly at right angles to the body at b. v
The inner section l is here shown as but little more than half the size of the outer section B, the lower edge thereof [i7 and the u iper edge thereof b being flanged outward v at right angles to the body. Said inner section is also provided with an opening corresponding to the opening lf in the outer section B, and its edges adjacent to said opening are flanged outwardly at right angles to the body at b". lf desired, however, the section may be of substantially the same sir/,e as the outer section B to provide a portion extending'from the end of the flange b7 downward between the section B and the pan A and havingat its lower edge a flange similar to and lying alongside the flange b.
The sections B l may be secured together in anysuitable manner. Thus the coaction between the engaging flangesof the two sections may be such that said sections may be perinanen tly and rigid ly connected by mere pressure, or, if desired, such engaging flanges may be soldered or riveted together. This applies also te the end plate or pan, which is permanently and securely positioned by its connection with the cushion-supporting railsa u, and which is encircled by (and preferably secured to) the flanges b', ffl, and fr* of the outer section Band thc [la nge b? of' the inner section The engagement of the llanges f1 of the outer section and the flanges b" of the inner section adjacent to the o )ening r" is clearly illustrated in Fig. 3, as is also the engagement between the llangc f of the (intersection and the flange o of the inner section at the upper IOO IOS
vedges of both. At the latter point the coniend plate, said casing being formed in two posite structure is provided with an arm-rest parts provided with engaging flanges, sub- C, preferably, although not necessarily, stantially as described. l 6J' formed separable from the sections B B and 6. In a seat-frame the combination with if separable of wood or other material, as dean end plate having inturned flanges, of a sired. two-part metallic casing, each part having Figs. if, 5, and 6 illustrate but a slight de` engaging flanges, certain of said flanges coparture from the structure above described, acting with the flanges of said end plate, sub- Here the inner section of the frame is disstantially as described. .ro pensed with, and' the outer section follows a 7. In a seat-frame the combination with 1 somewhat different design, being adapted an end plate having inturned flanges, of a for a seat not provided with the usual arintwo-part metallic casing, each part having rest. In other essentials, however, the frame engaging flanges, a flange upon the outer of 7o is the same, being provided with the insaid parts and a flange u on the inner of said i 5 wardly-extending upper and lower flanges d parts coacting with the anges upon said end d and side flanges d2 d3, said flanges engaging plate, substantially as described. with the corresponding flanges on the end 8. In a seat-'frame the combination with plate E and the body, which may be aneled an end plate having inturned flanges, of a or strength and ornainented as wel if detwo-part metallic casing, each part having zosired, completely covering, concealing, and engaging flanges, one of said parts covering protecting the outer surface of said end plate the outer surface of` said end plate and cerand hiding from view the bolt-heads thereon. tain of the flanges of said casing coacting What I claim, and desire to secure by Letwith the flanges of said end plate, substan- 8o ters Patent, istially as described.
2 5 l1. In a seat-frame, the combination-with 9. In a seat-frame the combination with an end plate adapted to coact with the seat an end plate having inturned flanges at its mechanism and having a pei'ipheralflange, of upper and lower edges, of a two-part metala metallic casing extending over and `coverlic casing, the outer part having a flange at ing the outer surface of said end plate and its lower edge coacting with the flange at the 3o coacting with said flange, substantially as lower edge of said plate and the inner part described. Y having a flange at its lower edge coacting 2. In avseat-frame, the combination with I with the flange at the upper edge of said an end plate adapted to coact with the seat plate and means for securing the up er edges 9o mechanism, ,said plate having inturned l of said parts together, substantial y as den 3 5 flanges, of a correspondingly-flanged/metall scribed.

In a seat-frame, the combination with l lic casing extending over and covering the 4o an end plate adapted to coact with the seat y outer surface of said plate and having a pormechanism and having a flange at its upper tion intermediate its edges coacting with said edge, of a metallic casing extending over and flange, substantially las described. l covering the outer surface of said end plate 11. In a seat-frame, the combination of a roo and formed to coact with said flange, and an metallic end plate adapted to coact with seat 45 arm-rest coacting vwith the upper edge of mechanism 'and having a flange, a metallic said casing, substantially as described. I casing extending over and covering the louter 4. In a seat-frame, the combination with ,f surface of said plate and having a portion inan end plate adapted to coact with the. seat y termediate its edges coacting withsaidflange, tog mechanism, of a two-part metallic casing l and an arm-rest securedu on the upper edge 5o and an arm-rest vcoacting therewith, one i of said casing, substantiallly as described.
