This invention relates to improvements in paper boxes or cartons of that class in which the side walls thereof are provided with inteal flaps which are interlocked to form th end of the box.
The invention is herein shown as embodied in a rectangular box which opens at Oneside thereof and wherein both ends of the box are formed by a plurality of interlocking flaps; but the invention may be applied to other shaped cartons and to cartons having but one end wall.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter setforth, and more particularly pointed out in the a pended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view' of a rectangular carton made in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a per. spective view of one end of thecarton with t e side and bottom walls of the box set up, 7
but with the interlocking flaps opened outwardly away from their locking ositions to more clearly, show the construction thereof.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing, in their" closed positions all the end flaps but that carrying the locking tongue and the locking tfingue partially inserted into the locking 3 't. of the box with the several flaps in their in terlocked positions. and of the blank from which the carton is made. 1 r As shown in the drawings, the caresses sists of a top wall a, two parallel side walled,
a bottom wall a, and end walls'a", the'littei'" consisting of a plurality of interlocking flaps; Each of said endwalls comprises three fla i a flap a, connected with one side wall 0 the box, a flap a, connected with the other side wall thereof, and a flap a", connected with Fig. 5 is a view of one forming the carton (indicated by Ain Fig. 5) consists of connected'parts iettered'a, a, a, o, c, angl d, corresponding with the correspondindj lettered parts of the box. One of said aps, c, is provided with a tongue and another, a, with a slit, which is engaged by said ton no and by which the end walls are locked romdateral displacement. The remaining or third flap, a, is provided with a narrowed extremity, which when the flaps are folded enters between the flaps a and 0', at one side of the center of the box end. The
the blank and is connected with one of the side walls, so that it ma be disconnected at its free edge from the 0th the box; as indicated in Figs. 2,3, an The free edge of said top wall,'moreover when the to well is in its closed position.
vided with a notch a, by which the fac litateopening the carton.
i The'figip a is provided with a slit a, which center of the box and Said flap a is preferthat when the blank is folded or is in its closed condition it engages at its upper and low Essen -tongue a, which is so shaped and located 51st its free end or extremity is directed wardlyan "israda ted'to enter said slit a said" Ha "s? "The? tongue bearing flap a is made 0 a width at its side which is attached. was side wall "of equal to the width of said the bottom wall of the box. The blank as top wall a. of the box in the particular con' struction shownfiis formed on one edge of er side wall to O on r as shownyis provided with a longitudinal narrow flap G, which fits inside of the upper edge of the adjacent side wall of the box The'u'ppere go of said side wall, which is engaged by the free'edge of the top wall, iglpgroor may engage the said flap C of the .top wall to referahfi extends from the side wall of the be at s; esint near the top of the hex obliquely downward and terminates near the ably rectangnlarin form and of such width.
n if r margins the top and bottom walls of *"thecarton. The flap c is provided 'w'itha Fig.4 is an inside view of the'end'wedl and 'aas aieiaieesg connections between side wall, and the tongue a is located at or adjacent to themargin of said flap remote from said side wall. Said flap a is notched at its lower edge or lowermost lateral ma in to form said tongue, and the margin 4: of t e downwardl when the flaps are folded in- 'margin 11".
a" of the locking-slit a flap at the inner side ofsaid notch is oblique and extends diagonally across the flap from one lower corner thereof to about the center of the flap. Preferabl the .inclination of said margin a is such t at a. line for an extension thereof will intersect the vertical side wall of the box at a point somewhat below the top mar 'n of the side wall. When the partsare fo ded, as seen in Fi 1, the margins of the flaps argiear as radia lines on the end of the box. aid flap a is of such width that the outer margin of the tongue when the flap'is in its closed osi'tion is located adjacent to the side wa a, to which the flap a is attached, and extends substantially across the end of the carton. A flap B is preferably attached to the upper edge of the flap a and is so arranged that when the carton is set up it extends within the carton beneath the to wall thereof.
The tongue-bearing fla a, is provided at the point or angle where t e inner mar in a of t e locking-tongue intersects the o lique mar -ns a" of the said fiap with a notch a, whic extends in alinement with said oblique The inner end of said notch a is so located with respect to the adjacent and that when the flaps are interlocked and in their normal ositions or in position to hold the end of the ox in its rectangular form the margins of the paper end of the box until the toiigu at the said inner end of the notch a and at the end-a, of the slit a will be enga ed or in contact with each other. The ang ar position of the notch a" is such, moreover, that when the ton ue is inserted in the slit and parts are inter ocked no disengagement of the interlocked flaps can be e ected by strain coming on the two flaps outward in the direction of their planes or-in direction topull them apart such as will be brought on the flags by outward pressure on the side' walls of t e contents of e carton, but such strain will tend to more firmly interlock the parts. Moreover, the distance from the corner a of the box to which said flap a is attached to the inner end of the notch a, measured along the edge or, margin a of the flap a, is equal to the distance from the said corner of the box to the inner end a" of the slit 0 when the flaps are folded together, while the distance from the same corner of the box to the inner end of the margin 0 of the tongue a is lessthan the distance fromsaid corner to the said inner end a" of said locking-slit, so that in the act of inserting the tongue a, into the slit 0 the inner part of the margin 0" come against the end a of the locking-slit and by its ressure thereon produce shghtdistortion 0 the e is fully insertes the e maed and the notch a" reaches made a end a" of the slit, when the edge lift terial at the end a" of the slit enter the,
S5 notch a and the parts will resume their tsetse natural or hormal positions. After the end of the locking-slit is thus interlocked with the notch a l any strain on the two flaps in cannot be drawn out of the slit by such ressure, because the inner end of the slit will in an effort to Withdraw the tongue from the slit be brought a ainst the side edge of the said notch, whic verse to the tongue or practically at right angles to the direction in which .the tongue must be moved in order to withdraw it from said slit. From this construction it follows that after the parts have been interlocked, as described, they cannot be disconnected except by tearing ofi, breaking, or distorting the projecting part of the edge a of the tongue adjacent to the notch a". To facihtate the insertion of the to ue in the slit a, the said inner edge a. of t e tongue is inwardly curved or made concave in form, as shown in the drawings, sothat as the flap a is swung or moved about the corner a of the box as a center duri the insertion of the to ue in the slit, as il ustrated in 3, the sai inner ed e a of the tongue Wlll slide along the en 01" of the slit until theinner part of said edge a is reached, when by reason of the outward inclination of the said inner end of said edge a the flap a will be drawn inward through a slight bending, yielding, or distortion of the end of the box until the notch 0, reaches the slit, when the TOO parts will become engaged, as before described, and the end of the box will spring back to its normal or natural position. V
As a further improvement in boxes with interlockin fia s of the general character described, te ,ap a is so constructed to enga e at one margin thereof with one of the sid e walls of the carton and at its other margin with the locking where the latter enters secure these results, the flap made equal in width to the the carton at its and its outer end is narrowed by away the flap at one side only, an oblique part 'a' and a part a 'substans the locking-slit. To
bottom wall of cutting so as to form tially parallel with the aqpposite edge of the flap, which latter is in bottom of the box, so that the outer part of said flap a line thereof and which when the flaps are e perpend cular to the line at which the said flap a. joins the consists of a narrow part or a .tongue a, located at one side of the center.
folded together rests between the flaps d, and
a. The width of said tongue a" is. such that when the flaps are folded together the side margin 0) of said tongue will eng' e the locking-t e a at the lace where the latter enters t slit a". T e parts are preferably so proportioned, moreover, that when e'siaaad the flaps are folded the'said edge a" of the flap a coincides with the inner end a" of the slit o and will enter the notch a, the result being that separation of the interlocked flaps a and a is prevented by engagement of said notch o" with the said ed e a", as Well as with the edge of the flap atlt e inner end of the slit a.
By so constructin the flap a that the margin will inter ock with the notch a" described and by also so constructing the opposite side edges of said flap a thatit will bear against theside ed e a of the box where the flap a joins said side a an additional means is provided for holdin the end of the carton rigidly in its rectangu or form and preventing distortion thereof under inward pressure on opposite corners of the box.
In order to enable the tongue a to be easily inserted into and removed from the locking-slit a, one or more slits a, arranged to extend laterally from said slit a, are provided in the flap a, said slit or slits a serring to make the edge of the paper above the l" jrided with a flap, the lisp on one of the side walls being provided with a slit and the other slit (1. flexible, so that it will readily yie d warden pressure being applied thereto thereby permit the tongueof the fiape 'to be easilfi' and quickly inserted in the act of interloc ing the parts. This result will be well attained by the useof one slit a, and
one only will be ordinarily used for smallboxes; but as a preferable construction two slits are used, as shown in the drawings, said slits being laterally separated from each other. Said two slits a" a form a'fiexible tongue a", the free end of which is adapted to yield inwardly, and thereby permit the ready insertion of the tongue into the slit a. The slit or slits a will be located'at some distance from said inner end a of said slit (1, so as not to interfere with the proper interlocking connection 0? the outer end of the slit with the notch a", as hereinbefore described.
