IMPROVEMENT IN SKATES.

To ALL WHOM Ir MAY co'NeERN:
Be it known that I, EDGAR MURRAY, of the city and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a certain new and useful Improvement in Skates; and I do hereby decIare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of Figure 1 is a plan of said skate.
Figure 2 is a side view of the same, with one of the clamps removed.
Figure 3 is a plan of a modification of'said skate; and
Figure 4 is a side View ofthe screw and nutof said modified device.

Skates have heretofore been made with a pair ofclamps applied at the sides of the boot-sole; they are, however, liable to break and become loose under the strain to which they are subjected.
The nature of my said invention consists in a pair of clamps, sustained by and sliding in metal loops, that are attached to the under side of the sole-plate, in combination with a centre-pin, Athat operates said clamps by acting within their diagonal slots, and is itself supported by and moves upon a central loop or bar receiving the notched head of said pin.
The said pin is connected by a sliding barwith the heel-clamp, so that pressure is applied simultaneously to the sides of the sole and-the front and back of the heel.
In the drawing, a is the runner, to which the sole-plate 6 and heel-plate e are attached.
d is the back clamp or guard-plate, around the rear of the heel.
e e are the front clamps, taking the-sides of the sole by meansl of the lips e ef.
The clamps e slide, the one upon the other, beneath the sole-plate b, and are sustained by and move within the metal loops f, that are formed ofmctallic plates with projecting ends that pass through holes in and -are firmly riveted to the sole-plate b, so that there is no risk ofthe clamps e becoming loose when in use.
The central loop f receives upon its upperesuriace the slotted head of the pin z', that passes through the end of the slide-bar g, also through diagonal slots in -the clamps e, and the point of said pin is sustained by and I guided in theslot 2 in the plate 6, running longitudinally ofthe same.
Bythis construction, the pin z', being sustained at both of its ends, cannot be worked loose by pressure or l strain upon the clamps e, and the only duty perfdrmed by the 'slide;bar g is to move said pin z' either forward to clamp, or draw it back to release the clamps e e.
The bar g is sustained near its back end by a rivet or screw, 3, passing through a slot that allows of the end-motion to said bar y, and to the end of this bar g the heel-clamp is athxed.
In gs. 1 and 2, the lever k, hinged at 4, is shown as carrying the clamping-disk Z, that is supported by a block, 5, upon the lever k, and made adjustable when the nut 6 is slackened, the said lever k being provided with a slot to allow of that adjustment, so that the disk Zwill take against the front of the heel, firmly clamping that, and operating the clamps e e. The edge of the disk Z embeds itself` into the leather of the heel sufficiently to give a good hold upon the same, and the end of the lever sswings in beneath the plate e, between that and a detaining-plate, m.
The construction and operation of the variation shown in figs. 3 and Ltwill be apparent, the clamping-disks lbeing set to slide longitudinally in a slot in the plate c, and operated upon by the screw n, in place of the lever 7c, said screwn, when rotated by a'key," pressing the disks Zin one direction and the slide-bar g in the other direction. v
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The pin z', guidedat one end by the bar orcentral loopf, and at the other end by the longitudinal slot 2,
in combination with the clamps e e and sliding bar g, as and for the purposes set forth.
