-..,'l`his invention relates to an improved conio struction ot' frames which are more particularly designed for machines in which attachments require support between the side pieces thereof.

The rods or bars of each cross-piece may be arranged either vertically one above the other or horizontally side by side, dependingI f upon the particular location in the fra-me ork the attachment which the the character of same is intended to support.
Although attachments for various purposesv l may be mounted on the cross-pieces of the frame, those shown in Fig. 1 ol the drawings consist of brackets q g, mounted on the crosspieces B`l B* and carrying the'bearings in which the rollers G of the second folding device are joiirnaled: a bracket h. mounted on the cross-piece B and supporting part of the mechanism which operates the gripper Il, whereby the sheets are side-registered before being operated upon by the blade 'i and rollers I of the first folding device; brackets j y', mount-ed on the cross-pieces B2 B3 and carrying the bearings in which the rollers J of the fourth book-folding device are journaled; bearings c k, which are mounted on the cross-pieces B2 B5 and in which are 'ournaled the upright packer or rock-shaft for operating the packers of the folded signature-stacking devices, and brackets k k2, which are mounted on cross-piece B and which support the rollers lf3 and other parts of the fourth periodical-folding device. The means for fastening each of these attachments or brackets to its cross-piece consists of two clamping-plates L- L, which are secured against opposite sides of the pair of rods by one or more bolts or screws l and either one or both of which carry parts of the particular attachment Which'is to be mounted on said rods. The clamping-bolts l preferabl vconnect the central parts of the clamp- .ing-p ates and are arranged between the rods of the cross-piece against which they bear, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4.
The inner side of each clamping-plate is provided with a pairof concave recesses or seats m, which face the pair of similar recesses in the companion clampinglate. The recesses of both plates have t eir axes sepa rated the same distance as that between the axes of the rods, and the latter fit on opposite sides into the pairs of recesses in said plates, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.
The several duplex rods, the sockets of the several supportingbrackets receiving the ends of the same, and the recesses of the sev-l eral lattachment-brackets of the machine have their axes preferabl t all arranged the same distance apart, as s own in the drawings. By this means the manufacture of the machine can be effected rapidly, accurately,
and at reduced cost, and the parts can be made interchangeable by means of standardjigs which are constructed suitable for fitting up all of the socket-brackets and attachmentbrackets. This system of frame construction also permits of forming the recesses of the attachment-brackets so that the attachments may be supported at anv desired angle relatively to the duplex rods with equal acility and also ermit of easily adjusting the attachments into the required osition which the brackets on the cross-pieces B B2 B3 B4 are either parallel or at right angles to the crossieces,while the bracket k for su porting t e fourth folding-rollers k3 on t e i side pieces and each having a pair of circular j, Tlns is apparent from ig. 1, in

4. A machine-frame comprising side pieces each of which is provided on its inner side with a pair of sockets, and a cross-piece comprising a pair of arallel bars or rods having their ends seated) in said sockets, substantially as set forth.
5. A machine-frame comprising side pieces, brackets arranged on the inner sides of the side pieces and each provided with a pair of sockets, and a cross-piece comprising a pair of parallel bars or rods having their ends seated in said sockets, substantially as set forth.
6. A machine-frame comprising side pieces, bracket-s arranged on the inner sides of the side pieces and each provided with a pair of sockets, a cross-piece comprising a pair of parallel bars or rods having their ends seated 1n said sockets, and bolts connecting said bars, brackets and side pieces, substantially as set forth.
7. A machine-frame comprising side pieces, brackets arranged on the inner sides of the side pieces and each having a pair of circular sockets the axes of which are parallel, a crosspiece comprising a pair of parallel circular rods or bars seated at their ends in said sockets, and bolts passing through said side pieces and brackets and each engaging its threaded end with one of'said rods or bars, substantially as set forth.
8. A machine-frame comprising side pieces, brackets arranged on the inner sides of the sockets the axes of which are parallel, a crossars havin their ends concaved and seated in said soc ets, and bolts passing through said side pieces and brackets and engaging IOO IIO
