APPARATUS FOR PLACING GASKETS INTO INGLQSING BOXES.

Be it known that I, EDWARD F. GILBERT, of Lyons, in the county of l/Vayne, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Plac- .ing Caskets into Inclosing Boxes, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of this invention is to provide convenient and efficient means for lowering burial-caskets into their inclosing boxes, usually termed rough boxes, and to that end the invention consists in the novel con struction and combination of the component parts of the apparatus, as hereinafter described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of the inclosing box equipped with my invention shown in position to support the burial-casket preparatory to depositing it into the box. Fig. 2 is a plan view of said box. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of the connection of the manipulating-strap to the rope or its equivalent employed for placing the casket in the box. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detailed view of the pivotal connection of the casket-supporting bar to the le vers which are pivoted to the box.

A represents the box, which is designed to receive and inclose the burial-casket repre sented at O.
a a and a a are two pairs of levers, disposed one pair in each end of said box and pivoted to the sides thereof, as shown at b b. To the free ends of said pair of said levers is pivotally connected a transverse bar 0 for supporting the casket O, which is placed thereon to lower it into the inclosing box A. Said pivotal connection is illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings and is desired to allow the bar 0 to move more freely from under the casket supported thereon.

The free ends of these arms are connected to the free ends of the le vers by means of struts e e to allow the said levers to swing to a plane above the pivots b b, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

To operate the levers a a and a a synchronously, I employ a strong cord or rope or cablef, which is attached at its ends to the struts e e at one end of the box A.

The main portion of the rope f or its equivalent passes from the struts, to which it is at tached, as aforesaid, to and around the pulleys i t on the levers a a at the opposite end of the box A and thence back and around the pulleys i t on the arms (Z d and leaving a long central portion of the rope in the form of a long slack loop extending toward the opposite end of the box.
j represents a stout strap for operating the levers a a. This strap is connected at one end to the center of the rope f or its equivalent and passes around the bottom of a sheave pivoted to a bracket Z, which is fastened to the lower portion of the end wall of the box, as shown in Fig. 1. The free end of said strap passes through a suitable brake or clamp n, attached to the upper portion of the aforesaid wall. By means of said brake or clamp the strap can be retained to hold the levers a a in their elevated position and allow the casket to be placed upon the transverse supporting-bars c c.
In order to equalize the strain throughout the length of the rope f, I connect to the inner end thereof a segmental block 0. (Shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings.) Said block is provided in its curved portion with a groove through which the rope passes.
I do not limit myself to the use of the brake n, as the same may in some cases be dispensed with.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A casket-inclosing box provided at each end of its interior with a pair of levers pivoted to the upper portion of the sides of the box, transverse casket-supporting bars connected to the free end of the levers and means for raising and lowering said ends of both pairs of levers simultaneously as set forth.
2. A casket-inclosing box provided at each end of its interior with a pair of levers, pivoted to the upper portion of the sides of the box, transverse casket-supporting bars connected to the free ends of said levers, arms connected to the lever and pivoted in common therewith, pulleys pivotally supported on the arms, a rope connected at its ends to one pair of said levers and passing thence around the pulleys and having its central portion slack for operating the same and impart synchronous movement to the levers as set forth.
3. A casket-inclosing box provided at each end of its interior with a pair of levers pivoted to the upper portion of the sides of the box, arms pivoted in common with said levers, struts connecting the free ends of said arms and levers, transverse casket-supporting bars pivotally connected to said ends of the levers, pulleys pivoted to the free ends of the arms, a rope attached at its ends to the struts of one pair of the levers and passing thence around the pulleys, and a strap con nected to the center of the rope for operating the same and impart synchronous movement to the levers as set forth and shown.
4. A casket-inclosing box provided at each end of its interior With a pair of levers pivoted to the upper portion of the sides of the box, transverse casket-supporting bars pivoted to the free ends of said levers, arms connected to the lever and pivoted in common therewith, pulleys pivotally supported on said ends of the arms, a rope connected at its ends to one pair of levers and passing thence over the pulleys, and a manipulatingstrap having attached to one of its ends a segmental block receiving on its curved portion the central portion of the aforesaid rope as set forth and shown.
