IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNKS.

Beit known that I, GEORGE CROUCH, of' the city, county, and State' of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use, certain Improvements in the Construct-'ion of Trunks; and I do declare that the following is a full, clear, and correct description of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 is a. view of my trunk opened, showing the tray ir top of samle. Figure 4 is a view of the trunk opened, the hat-box being opened from the rear side.

In the drawings, like parts of the invention are indicated by thesame'letters of reference.

The nature of the present invention consists in combining, with a. trunk, an apartment for reception of the hat or bonnet of the traveller, which apartment is constructed and located as more fully hereinafter set forth.

To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my improvement, I- will proceed to describethe same.

A shows the body of the trunk, and B is the lid of the same.-

C show s a tray, secured within the interior of the top, B, by means of the tray-bolts c c.

This tray, C, is arched, to conform with the top or lid, B, within which it is secured.

In the centre of this tray is the apartment for the reception of the hat or bonnet of thetraveller. I

Therfront portion or door, D, of the apartment, forms, when closed', a portion of the tray C, and, when opened andlet doma-(see iig. 2 of the drawings,) forms, as itwere, 'a shelfpi'ojecting in front of the tray C.

Upon the interior of this door D, about centrally, secured a circular stand, E, provided with a cap-piece, made larger than the stand D supporting it.

Upon this cap-piece the hat or bonnet may be placed, being secured thereto by means of the rubber or elastic bands d, having their ends attached to rings e, secured in the 'base of the shelfor door, said bands passing over thev hat or bonnet when placed upon the cap-piece of the stand.

In fig. 4 the tray C is shown as let down from its position within .the top, B, -in which case access is had to the apartment by opening a door upon the rear end of the same.

The principal feature ofthe invention is, that a trunk is provided with a hat or bonnet-apartment without loss'oi` room or danger of interfering with the body of the trunk, which is thus left free for the packing of clothing and other articles, and that for convenience this apartment is made accessible from both the front and' rear sides. of the tray C.

A further advantage is, that the hat-support of this apartment is removable at will, ali'owing its use to be dispensed with, and the space it occupied to be devoted to other purposes. v Y l i i The support for'the cap-piece being hollow, may be used as a receptacle for collars, and the cap-piece itself as a pin-cushion, if desired.

The increased cost of a trunk fitted with an apartment of the character indicated is but nominal, while its utility will be apparent to all travellers.v

Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to. secureby Letters Pat-ent, is

1. The combination, with a trunk, A, of a hat'orfbonnet-apartment, constructed as described, and located in the tray C centrally, as shown, for the purp'osesfset forth.

2. Giving access to tbc same, either from the bottom or top of' the tray C, as shown.
