Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PROCESS OF MAKING AN INTERNAL REMEDY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 26, 1906.
- Application filed May 25,1905. Serial No. 262,253-
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, RICHARD GRIEsE, chemist, a subject of the King of Prussia, German Emperor, residing at Berlin, Kingdom of Prussia, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Process of Making an Internal Remedy, of which the following is a specification.
The subject-matter of the present invention relates to a process for preparing in a condition which renders possible its internal application the complicated organic iodin compound metaiodinorthooxyquinolin sulfonic acid, (O ILIOHSO HNQ covered by the United States'Patent No. 57 6,494.
The present invention also relates to medicaments or internal disinfectants containing this compound.
Hitherto the said organic iodin compound has been utilized in medicine only for external treatment, the internal treatment having been hitherto deemed out of the question on account of the damage to the stomach connected with such an internal application and on account of disturbances produced in the circulation of the blood. In order to render possible the internal application of the said iodin compound, which is very useful in itself, it is first and foremost necessary to bring the same into a readily-soluble condition, so that the compound on being taken is readily incorporated in the gastric juices or the blood. With this object in view a quantity of sodium bicarbonate, oleum menthae piperitae, (peppermint-0H,) and, if desired, tannalbin (which consists of tannic acid and albumin) are added in certain proportions. The quantity of metaiodinorthooxyquinolinsulfonic acid, according to the exigencies of the case to be treated, varies between nine hundred and twenty-five and four hundred grams per one thousand grams of the mixture, and the amount of sodium bicarbonate between seventy-five and six hundred grams, whereas the oleum menthae piperitae is added only by drops, and when needed tannalbin is added to the extent of twenty-five grams per one thousand grams of the mixture.
The sodium bicarbonate is mixed with the peppermint-oil until the whole quantity of the said sodium compound mixes uniformly with the oil, which has been added in drops, or until the latter has dissolved in the former substance. To this sodium bicarbonate containing peppermint-oil the metaiodinorthooxyquinolin-sulfonic acid is then added and thoroughlyincorporatedtherewith,preferably by stirring and sifting. The mixture thus resulting, which is in the form of powder, is most suitably introduced into the wellknown capsules, which readily dissolve in the mouth.
The compounding of the product is de pendent, according to the requirements to be determined in each case by the physician, not only upon variations within the above-stated limits, but also under some circumstances several constituents appear to be dispensable-for example, the addition of tannalbin in all cases where the patient is not inclined to diarrhea.
Experiment has shown that the addition of sodium bicarbonate effects the desired easy solubility of the metaiodinorthoxyquinolin-sulfonic acid in the gastric juice, improves the appetite during use, and in particular causes animprovement in the progress of digestion, which has a beneficial effect on the general state of health of the patient.
The powder produced according to the process described has proved itself to be a medimecant or internal disinfectant free from the unpleasant taste of metaiodinorthooxyquinolin-sulfonic acid and the frequently loosening effect on the bowels of that iodin compound, which in itself remains undissolved in the stomach, is opposed by a kind of bindin action, in consequence of the tannalbin. s the said powder is also readily soluble in water, in case of need it can be employed also for injections under the skin, in which case it exercises a more violent bacteria-killing action.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described process of producing from metaiodinorthooxyquinolin sulfonic acid an internal remedy capable of being assimilated and carried into the blood circulation which consists in mixing bicarbonate of soda with a small proportion of oil of peppermint, and incorporating said mixture with metaiodinorthooxyquinolin-sulfonic acid.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the-presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RICHARD GRIESE.
