The construction forming the subject-matter of this application is in the nature of an improvement on my prior Letters Patent of the United States, dated December 11, 1900, and numbered 663,604 and involves a change in the construction shown 'in said patent to provide a strong barrel-stop and the addition to said construction of an element for actuating the ejector mechanism and constituting besides an additional barrelstop.
Referring to the drawings, a indicates the frame of the gun, and b the barrel, on the under side ofwhich is the usual barrel-lug c, the barrel being ivotally sup ortedin the forfie pin (1. The lug haslahole bored therethrough lengthwise close to the under side of the barrel to receive the ejector-stem e, provided with the usual head f to engage the rim of a cartridge g. The'ejector-stem has a sliding movement in its seat and is provided with a notch h on its under side with which the upturned end 7' of a latch-lever k engages when the stem is pushed toward the pin d to bring the head f into a position flush With the end of the barrel. The lug c is vertically slotted, as at m, to receive the end of the latch-lever, and said lug'on the under side thereof is longitudinally slotted, as at 0, to receive the body of the latch-lever, as shown in my said prior patent.
The forward end of the latch-lever has a circular recess p extending transversely across the end thereof to fit the pin (1; but the latch is pivoted on the pin q, extending through it and the lug and located, as shown, a little below the pin (1 back of the latter and parallel with it, this end of the latch-lever having a vertically-disposed portion 1' extending across the forward open end ofthe hole in which the ejectorstem e is located. This stem does not extend entirely through the lug lengthwise, and there is a spiral spring between its inner end and the vertical end 1' of the latchlever, which spring is normally under compression to a sufiicient degree to efiect the actuation of the ejector when the latch-lever is operated by the tipping-down movement ofthe barrel and disengaged from the notch h in the stem of the ejector, the fixed abutment against which the spring 6 acts being the vertical forward end 1' of the latch-lever. The lower part of the forward end of this lever is extended beneath the pin (1 to a point beyond it, as shown at T9, which is so located as to come to a bearin against the frame beneath it when the barre is tipped down, whereby the opposite end of the latch-lever will be disengaged from the extractor-stem, and when this tipping-down movement is carried far enough to. cause this forwardly-extending tongues to come to a bearing against the under side of the pin (1 while its extremity bears downwardly on the frame, it constitutes a stop for the barrel.
At the rearward end of the latch-lever a T-shaped lever t is pivoted, as at 'v, the recroo tangularly-extending head w of which is adapted to engage with shoulders 90, formed in the sides of the frame by chambering the latter, as shown in the cross-sectional view, Fig. 3. This lever t hangs down loosely below the latch-lever, being let into a recess in the latter, as shown, whereby it is prevented from swinging quite to vertical position to the end that when the breech of the gun is closed it will strike the bottom of the frame and be swung to a position of parallelism with the lower edge of the lug and into a recess y in the latter. This lever 25 may be so proportioned that it will disengage the latch-lever and act as a barrel-stop by the engagement of its head U) with the shoulder 00, and it may be arranged to operate in conjunction with the forwardly-extending tongue 8 to perform both of the functions, or it may be so arranged that it will disengage the latch-lever alone and then in conjunction with the tongue 8 act as a barrel-stop.
The usual stop pin or screw 2 is located in the barrel-lug to enter a recess in the under side of the stem 6 of the ejector to limit the movement of the latter endwise.
Instead of using the swinging lever t a transversely-disposed pin 3 may be located in the rear end of the latch-lever is about in the position shown in Fig. 2, which may extend be yond the sides of the barrel-lug to engage the shoulders 00 in the sides of the frame, said shoulders in that case being located higher up on the frame, as seen in said figure, the barrel-lug being recessed, as at 4, to permit the rear end of the latch-lever to be swung up far enough to engage the notch in the ejectorstem.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a firearm of the character described, a barrel pivotally supported in the forward end of the frame, an ejector, a lug c on the lower side of the barrel, a longitudinal slot therein, a latch-lever is pivoted in the said lug and slightly below and in rear of the pivot supporting the barrel, a longitudinal hole extending through said lug close to the under side of the barrel, an ejector-stem e located in the hole in the lug, said pivoted latch-lever having an upturned part 1 extending across the forward end of the longitudinal hole in the lug, a compression-spring e located between the end of the upturned part of the ejector-lever and the end of the ejector-stem, the ejector-stem having a sliding movement in its seat, a part 8 integral with the latch-lever and extending forward and below the pivot for the barrel and adapted to engage the forward end of the frame when the barrel is tilted, a notch in the under side of said ejector-stem and normally engaged by the for ward end of the latch-lever, a depending T- shaped lever 2f pivoted to the rear end of the latch-lever and occupying a chambered portion of the frame, shoulders above said T- shaped lever whereby when the barrel is tipped downward the forwardly-extended part of the latchlever engages the frame, and the latch-lever is released from the ejec tor-stem allowing the same to be moved by the compression-spring, and the said shoulders are engaged by said T-shaped lever.
