IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-BELLS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MA'Y CONCERN:
Be Vit known that I, W. H. NICHOLS, of East Hampton, in the county of Middlesex, and in the State of Gonnecticut, have invented certain new-and useful Improvements in Door-Bells; and 'do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, A represents a cast-metal plate, to which thek bell is secured, and which has cast upon it the centre-post B, to the outer end oi which the bell C is attached, and thev pins D, I, a, L, and M, for purposes which will be hereinafter described.
The hell used isthe vordinary silvered and saucer-shaped one, but may be of any desirable shape.
The pin D is surrounded with a coiled-wire spring, E. One end of this spring lies against the centre-post B, while the other end is free, and is provided with a' hook. G'represcnts a rod, which has a hook formed upon it at each end. One end of this rod connects with the hooked end of spring E.
H represents a lever, cast in the form represented, with an eye in one end, which ts over the pin I, with a slot in it near its other end, and with two lugs, d and e, in which eyes are formed. One end of rod Gr hooks into the eye in lug e, and a rod, N, hooks into the eye of lug d, as seen.
K -represents a coiled wire, which surrounds pin a.l One end of this wire is provided with a bell-hammer, J, while the other end of said wire is made plain and straight, and passes through the slot in the outer end of lever H. A
L and M are pins` which act as stops for the straight end of wire K, which limit its motion in cach direction in which it moves.
To operate this bell, the hand -is placed upon the rod N, and when' it is drawn in one direction, the lever H, acting upon the straight end of wire K, causes said wire to turn n pon its pin, a, so as to make the hammer J strike against one side of the bell. As soon as the hand is removed from the rod N, or it is allowed to movel backward, the spring E, acting through connecting-rod G, causes the lever H to move backward, and, operating the wire K in an opposite direction, causes the hammer to strike against: the other side of`the bell. Thus, by drawing the rod N, and then letting it go suddenly, the hammer makes two strokes upon the bell.
.Having thus fully described vmy invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
vThe lever H, 'pivoted to the plate A at one end, and provided with a slot at its other, through which one and of the hammer-wire passes, said lever being provided with lugs d and e, by means of which it is connected to the spring E and to the bell-rod N; the lug d, to which the rod N is attached, being centrally located upon the lever,` to facilitate its operation, as and for the purpose specified. i
, In testimony that Il claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this first day of January, 1868.
'W. H. NICHOLS.
