UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 26, 1906.
Application filed November 26, 1904. Serial No. 234,247.
useful Improvements in Advertising Display-Stands, of which the folowing is a specification.
My invention relates to combined collapsible advertising or bulletin stand and detachable sanitary receptacle, and my first object in producing a device of this character is to provide a convenient means for displaying advertlsing that I can place on the outer edge of a sidewalk where it can be readily seen by the people as they pass, and a second object that have in view in providing such a device is to provide a convenient means or a place to deposit waste papers that usually accumulate in ofiices or on the street near by.
To this end my invention consists of certain other novel combinations and parts, which will be hereinafter described.
' Referring now to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is a perspective view of the stand disclosing a detachable showcase mounted thereon. Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the framework of the stand with the top or showc: se removed. Fig. 4 is the view in perspective of a sanitary receptacle which is adapted to be located on the inside of the stand. Fig. 5 is a cross-section of one of the standards of the advertising-stands, disclosing a recess on the inner edge, which is adapted to receivea board or sheet metal to write advertising inscriptions upon. Fig. 6 is a similar view of a modified standard constructed of sheet metal and is adapted to be secured to the standards. sectional view of the transparent panel inclosed in a wooden frame or sash. The frame is adapted to be inserted either in Fig. 5 or Fig. 6.when the wooden panel is withdrawn.
With the above brief description of my invention I will now proceed to more fully describe it by referring to corresponding numerals on the drawings, in'which 1 designates the standards or vertical inclined bars of the advertising-frame. Said bars are provided with cross-rails 2 at the bottom of the frame and are also provided with cross-rails 3 at the top of the frame. Said cross-rails at the top are beveled outward at 4, as shown, and are hinged together, so that Fig. 7 is a crosswhen the advertising-frame is standing in the positionas seen in Fig. 2 the said bevels move toward each other until they form-a vertical slot 5 at the top of the frame, as also seen in Fig. 2.
Mounted on top of the advertising-frame is a platform 6. Said platform is provided with an upwardly-extending base 7 on one side and upwardly-extending bf ses 8 on e ch end. The base-pieces 8 are grooved or slotted on their inner faces at 9. Said bottom piece 6 is provided with a longitudinally-depending strip or flange 10, which is adapted to snugly fit in the vertical slot 5, as shown. The said bottom is also provided with brackets 11, which are made secure thereto and are adapted to snugly enge ge the cross-rails 3 of the display-stand when in the position as seen at Fig. 1 and Fig. 2.
Mounted on the platform 6 is a showcase 12. The bottom ends thereof are provided With outward-extending tongues 13. Said tongues, are adapted to slidingly engage the grooves 9 in the end bases of the platform 6. Said showcase is also provided with a base 14 on one side made secure thereto. The object of said base is to give the showcase a corresponding uniform appearance with the bases 7 8.
' Mounted on the top of the showcase 12 is a recessed diminished extension 15. Said extension is provided with a round opening 16 in one of its faces. The object of sald opening is to insert or retain a timepiece, as indicated. The top of said extension is further provided with a lid 17, which is secured thereto. by hinges and a hasp 18 and is further provided central thereto with a socket 19. The object of saidsocket is for the reception of a small flagstaff, as shown. The side and end panels of the showcase and of the diminished extension are made of transparent material. The showcase, together with the platform 6. may be displaced from the-top of the display advertising-stand. I have further provided an adjustable sanitary receptacle 20 of a confi uration to fit the inside of the display-stand when said stand is in theposition as shown in Fig. 1 and Fig. 2. Said receptacle is provided with a movable bottom 21, as seen in Fig. 4. The object of said receptacle is for the reception of loose papers that accumulate near by on the sidewalk in front of an office-building. When filled, it is removed and emptied into a scavenger-wagon and again replaced to its normal position in the advertising stand.
IIO
I have provided an adjustable frame 22 for the support of the receptacle 20. Said frame 1s composed of two side bars and three crosspieces, as indicated in Fig. 3, and is hinged at one end to one of the bottom cross-bars 2 at the bottom of the'displayframe seen at Fig. 3. Secured to the central cross-bar of the frame 22 is a hasp or hook 23. Said hook is adapted to engage a ring 24, secured to the sidewalk, as indicated at 25. The object of securing the advertisingstand to the sidewalk is that it may not be overturned by the wind or otherwise. When the adjustable frame 22 is in position, as indicated at Fig. 2, it provides a support for the sanitary receptacle to rest upon; but when folded it is in the position seen at Fig. 3. I have further provided a swinging door 31, secured to one end of the advertising-frame by means of hinges 27, as indicated at Fig. 1. When the device is in position on the sidewalk, this door stands toward the street, so that when the sanitary receptacle is to be removed for emptying the door 31 is swung open and after emptying it is replaced and the door closed. The opposite end of the stand, including a panel 28, is stationary with the exception of a small door 29, which is attached by a spring-hinge to a cross-piece 30. This small door is to be opened at any time for inserting small bundles of paper or other matter to be thrown into the receptacle 20. When the advertising-frame is to be moved or shipped to a distance, the end doors are re moved from the frame so that it can be folded or collapsed, as seen in Fig. 3.
The standard 1 of the advertising-frame and also the side rails 26 of the end doors are constructed in a manner so that a thin board or sheet metal of any transparent substance may be inserted therein and displaced at will.
Fig. 5 shows a modification of the standards 1, which is constructed from a solid piece of wood and is adapted to receive either a wooden panel or a transparent panel, the same as indicated at Fig. 7. Said transparent panel is provided with a frame or sash 33, which incloscs the glass or transparent panel 34. Said frame is adapted to engage a groove 35 in standard 1, seen at Fig. 5, and will also engage the groove or recess seen at Fig. 6.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In afolding advertising-bulletin displaystand of the character described, inclined supporting-standards, cross-bars hinged to the standards and adapted to support a sanitary receptacle between. the standards, said standards adapted. to support a showcase and removable bulletin-boards; substantially as described.
2. In a collapsible advertising displaystand of the character described supp ortingstandards, cross beams pivotally secured thereto, said standards and cross-beams adapted to receive and support a sanitary receptacle and a showcase and means for se curing the display-stand to a sidewalk; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM T. LITTLE.
