JOHN BARRQOFDINTING, ENGLAND.
APPARATUS ens PRooucme naeaaosa Specification of Application filed March 6, 1901. Serial No.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BARR, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at marked .with thewhole Dinting, in thecounty of Derby, England,
have invented certain new and useful IIn-' provements in Apparatus for Producing Lit.- erature for the Blind, of which the followingis a specification. a
his invention consists of a machine constructed on the principle of Shields pantograph engravingmachines, United States Patent No. 28,332, of 1860, and Crosslands English Patent No. 341 of 1896, and is designed to adapt such machine for printing or reproducing literature for the blind in the Braille or similar characters.
The invention willbe fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in sec-- .tion; and Fig. 2 is a plan of sufficient of the machine to illustrate the invention. Fig. 3
is an enlarged sectionalelevation of the moving bed F, the punches G, the indented roller- H, and the several parts adjacent thereto.
The machine is constructed with a table A, upon which is placed-a plate a, punched or or with a literary production written'with Braille points or indentations. Over the table A a pointer Ois mounted, capable of being moved in either direction over the table and of being lifted and lowered tocause it to 'engage w1th any of .the Braille points of the plate a. The pointer C is connected with slotted guides'or cams D D D common to a by which the movements of-the ointer'are transferred to and reproduced in t e slides The slides E move to and. fro as the pointer C-is moved backward and forward over the plated on the table-A, and upon these slides rest the ing-shaft e, and
and fro the disks E" andthe shaft 0 are ro- *tated.- The bed F is driving-disks E, fixed to the ends of the drivas the slides E are'moved to moved to and'fro transversely as the pointer O is movedto one side or the other across t v e plate a on the table.A.- Upon" the transversely-moving bed- F are mounted one, two, or more stands or brackets F, carrying punches by Whichthe work of re 'roductionisperformed, as\described in t e specifications of Shields Pas out N 0. 28,332, 0f 1860,and Grosslands Eng lish Patent No.

Letters Patent.
Patented June 26', 1906. 50,131.
I of which is covered with a number of small plate. The indented roller His rotated bac ward and forward by the driving-shaft'e and driving-disks E as th The perforated roller H of anyconvcnient length is divided into one, two, or more, preferably three, lengths, each the length of a sheet of Braille writing-paper or other convenient size of sheet. represent, therefore, three sheets under operationat the same time.
k The indented roller H is placed immediately under the punches G, one, two, or three of section of the rollerH. Where more than one punch is employed, they operate simultaneously toeach to produce a separate sheet of theprinting or literature. The point of shape with that 0f.a. Braille punchor style and also with the indents 7t in the roller H, so that when the punch drops it enters one of the indents h. I
The punches G aremounted'upon or piv. oted to the stands F, fitted V to the transversely-movable bed F, which is moved to and fro on the slide f by the transverse Inovement ofthe pointeror tracer 0 through the slotted theretopivoted armor able Weights g impetus to the v brought into operation. Each punch, lever, or arm 9 is pivoted to'a spring-actuated catch or bracket 9 which to givethe necessary force or Braille roller H.
themachine is placed jajbar orlever K, by which after eachstroke the punches G are raised out of contact with the indented Braille roller H and the punches-again released for the succeeding stroke when required. The bar is raised and lowered-by the treadle L', with which it is connectedby the connectingrod Z, and pivoted lever M, supported by the stand or bracket m. N The bar or lever. K is raised by the downward connecting-rod 1, actuated by; the..-1counterbalance-Wei ht W, which raises-thigfree ,end of the leverii, and'it is' droppedbydepress e reciprocating slides E, upon which the disks rest, move to and fro.
such" punches bein'gprovided, one for each Each punch attached to the endof a holds it up when lifted, or raised out of contact with the indented Under the punch, arms, or levers 9 across ndents or perforations 7, corresponding precisely with the indents of a Braille WI'1l3lI1-- Three lengths of roller each punch G corresponds exactly in size and guides or cams D and D, connected lever 9, provided with adjustpunch when it is released or movementof the;
ing the treadle I1, which raises the rod land lowers the free end of the lever M. 'llheupthey are held by the s rings or spring-catches g fitted :to them, an in its downward .movement the bar or lever K strikes or engages the spring-catches g and moves them so-asto release the punches, allowing them to fall with a certain amount of impact into the indents of the roller (H, inress'ing the-surface-of the sheet of paper on t ierollerwith acorresponding indent on-ones'ideand point-on the other.
The paper to be printed or embossed is p'laeednpon orsaround the indented :Braille rollerI-I, and'eaeh tall of 'the punc'hes'produces an impression thereon.
On a table A of the machine is'placed a plate a, punched or -marked to correspond With the literature desired to be produced, or 'the'plate a may be punched or marked with the wholeset-o'f Braille points or indentations, over which a slotted guide or slide, suehas iscommonly used with a Braille writing-plette, can be moved to indicate whichdf thepointsareto be reproduced. "-Ihe o erator then brings the pointeror tracer Co the pantograp'ih into the desired indentation on.
plate a, thereby moving the Braille roller H and the punches-G to their correspondin po-- siiion. The treadle L is thendepresse re- :leasing the punchesG, whic'h fall each into an indentation in the roller H, producing the 'I-G- quiredpoint' or mark upon the paper on the roller,
What I claim as :my invention, and desire "to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. In a 'pantograph engraving-machine,
- the combination with the Work-table A, the
pointer -'C moving over same, the slotted guides 13, D, D, the movable slidesE and rotatable disks E and shaft e' of a plate a .formed with Braille points pl need upon the table A, and a Braille roller ll provided with indents h upon which the paper to vbe marked is placed, mounted upon the shaft 6 and rotated by the movableslides E, and punches G to indent the paper, substantially as described.
2. In a pantograph engravingqnachine the combination with the punches G, punch-lever 'g, movingbed F and movable slides E, disks Y-rotnted thereby and in cans i or actuating the same, of a Braille roller l-l provided with indents-lt mounted upon and rotated by the'movable-slides E and disks E, and Braille plateplaced upon the operating-table A, sub stantially as described.
3. In a pantogrnph em raving-mnohine the combination with the punches (i. .puni-h-leversg, brackets 11" movable bed F, movable. slides and disks E thereon and means for actuatii'ig the same, of a Braille roller l'l provided with indent-s I). mounted upon the shaft e and rotated by the disks it, substantially as described.
4. In a .pan'tograph engraving-n1aehine,
the combination with the punches (i. punchlevers g moving bed F and movable slides l'l and means'for actuating the same, of an indented Braille roller ll, mounted inpon and rotated by the movable slides E, and d irided into anumber of-sections or lengths each the length-of-asheot of Braille writ ingpa 01. substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereinn o signed any n ame in the presence of 'two su hscri hing; Witnesses.
