(c1. 10i-99) This invention has for its objectl a music printing machine.
Printing music by handis a long and complicated operation necessitating the cooperation of experienced and very skillful operators. `In. fact, 5 this work presents diniculties partly ycaused by the fact that musical signs are of great variety in form and are not aligned as the letters of a text on one and the same horizontal line, but are distributed on the lines constituting the stave or extend beyond this` stave sometimes above the latter and sometimes below the same. Another difilculty of this work arises from the fact that the distance between two musical signs is not always the same and depends on the value of lthe note and on the number of signs it is necessary to insert in a bar of the musical text.
The music printing machine forming the sub-A ject-matter of the invention, by which the printing of music is made very easy and allows this work to be rapidly executed by unskilled operators, is mainly characterized by the fact that it comprises a table on which can move a frame carrying the paper on which the `printing of music is to be eiected, a carriage movable relatively to the table and carrying punches on which the different music characters are secured, which carriage can be moved by the operator so as to bring the punch carrying the character toy be printed in front of a jointed lever actuated by a driving mechanism; a source of light provided with a suitable optical system producing a light ray is arranged on the table so that the light ray produced strikes the paper, by passing through an opening provided in the tableand having Va glass plate, and materializes the point Where the punch, acted upon bythe lever, strikes the paper, this allowing adiustment'of the frame in the required position and the printing of the sign at the suitable place.
The invention is further characterized by the following arrangements:
(l) the jointed lever, acting on the punches carrying the type, is subjected to the action of a cam which imparts two downward movements to the said lever; during oneV of these movements, the type carried by the punch on which the lever acts, comes in contact with a small movable inked table, subjected to the action of a"lever, the movements of Ywhich take place in synchronism with those of the jointed lever acting on the punches carrying .the type; during the other of the said; movements, the type carried -by the punch comes in contact with the `paper Yand prints it, the inked table being Amoved away during this time;
(2)` a pedal actuated by the Voperator allows a clutch to connect a suitable motor to the mechanism driving 'the punches and the inking device for printing each type, eachv depression of the pedal producing the printing of a type;
(3) the carriage carrying the type is provided with a rack meshing with a toothed wheel which can be actuated by the operator vby, means of a. handle,l in order toi move the punch carrying the suitable type in the plane in which the jointed lever moves. In order that the invention may be clearly understood, an embodiment of the same is described f 1-0 hereinafter, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanyingdrawings, in which:

On the shaft 45 is keyed a lever 41 on' the free end of which is pivotally mounted a pawl 48 in engagement with a pawl wheel 49 driving a shaft 5B on whichacylinder 5I is mounted. This cylinder 5I is arranged in a cup 52; a small plate 153-arra'nged on the bottom of this cap 52, which serves as a receptacle for printing ink, leaves on the surface of the cylinder 5l only a thin ilm of ink. f

This linkage enables the frame 8 andpaper I4 to be moved in any direction but always in parallelism with itself.

The carriage 1 is moved by: acting on the crank 23, and the punch carrying the required type to be printed is brought opposite the lever 51.
For each printing of type, the operator must act onthe pedal 29. Upon each'depression of the .pedal 29, the link 28 causes the lever 21 to pivot,
this lever acting on the clutch 26, and the latter lrenders the shaft 3B rigid with the shaft 25 driven by the motor 3 during a revolution of the shaft 25, then the clutch 26.ceases to act.
Theclutch 26 will cause the shaft 3G to again Vbe 'rigid with the shaft 25 only when the operator depresses the pedal again.
For each revolution of the shaft 30, the cam 33 imparts two movements to the lever1 61, the roller 63 of which rolls on thesaid cam; during one of these movements,l the lever 61, urged by the spring 39, pivots about the shaft 45 and presses, by its free end, on'the punch 5 located in its plane of oscillation, the punch 5 moves down and the type I5 it carries comes in contact with the inking table 5 which hasV come under the punch 5 owing to the action vof the lever E5 keyed on the shaft 45; then, the punch 5 moves up again, the
' cam 33 acting on the lever G1 in opposition to the action of the spring B9, the inking table 5 moves away under the action of the lever 50, and, iinally, the punch 5 moves down again, the lever 61 being again subjected to the action of the'spring 69. The type I6 carried by the punch then effects an impression on the paper I4.
The rotation of the shaft 3B determines, owing to the gears 32, 34, Y36 and 38, the rotation of the inking cylinder 42 and the rotation of the cams 40 and 4I. The cams 4B and 4I producing the rocking movements of the levers 58 and 65 controlling the cylinders 54 and 6I, the cylinder 54 comes in contact with the cylinder 5I receiving the ink contained in the cup 52, is covered with ink, and then comes in contact with the cylinder 42 which is thereby covered with ink.

In a music printing machine, a table constituting a support for the paper and provided with an opening, a glass plate arranged in the said opening, a jointed device for maintaining the paper in parallelism to itself throughout its range of movement, a source of light, an optical system for concentrating the rays emitted by the said source of light, for directing them in the said opening and for producing a spot of light through the paper, so as to previously locate on the paper the printing point of the desired musical sign, a movable carriage, slides carried by the said carriage, a frame secured on the said table, rollers secured on the said frame and serving as a guide for the said carriage, punches carrying the musical signs and vertically movable on this carriage, a motor, means actuated by the said motor for moving the said punch for causing it to print the musical sign chosen, inking means for inking the desired musical sign, means for actuating this inking means in synchronism withthe movements of the punch carrying the musical sign chosen, means for kinematically and momentarily throwing the said motor ingear, and means for moving the punch carrying the desired musical sign.
5. In a music printing machine, a table constituting a support for the table and provided with an opening, a glass plate arranged in the said opening, a jointed device for maintaining the paper in parallelism to itself throughout its range of movement, a source of light, an optical system for concentrating the rays emitted by the said source of light, for directing them in the said opening and for producing a spot of light through the paper, so as to previously locate on the paper the printing point of the desired musical sign, a movable carriage sliding, through slides, on rollers secured on the said frame carried by the table, punches carrying musical signs and vertically movable on the said carriage, a motor, a pivoted lever for acting on the punch carrying the musical sign chosen, a cam carried by a shaft for imparting a double movement to the said pivoted lever, an inking table for Ainking the desired musical sign, a pivoted lever for moving the said inking table in synchronism with the movements of the punch carrying the musical sign chosen, a clutch for kinematically rendering the motor rigid with the said shaft, and means for actuating the said clutch.

In a music printing machine, a table conthrough slides, on rollers secured on the said frame carried by the table, punches carrying musical signs and vertically movable on the said carriage, a motor a pivoted lever for acting on the punch carrying'the musical sign chosen, an inking table, a cam carried by a shaft for imparting a double movement to the said pivoted lever, during the iirst movement of which the punch lowers for causing the musical sign to come in contact With the inking table which has moved thereunder, then the punchrises again, and during the second movement the punch lowers for causing the musical sign to effect an impression on the paper, the inking table having moved away, a pivoted lever keyed on a shaft for moving the said inking table, gears, a cam and a pivoted lever for imparting the movement of the frstshaft to the said second shaft, an ink reservoir, rotary cylinders for transferring ink to the inkingtable, means causing the said cylinders to rotate, a clutch for kinematically and momentarily rendering the motor rigid with the said rstrshaft, and a pedal-for actuating the raid clutch.

In a music printing machine, a table constituting a support for the paper and provided with an opening, a glass plate arranged in the said opening, a jointeddevicefor maintaining the paper in parallelism to itself throughout its range of movement, a source of light, an optical system for concentrating the rays emitted by the said source of light, for directing them in the said opening and for producing a spot of light through the paper, so as to previously locate on the paper the printing pointof the desired musical sign, a movable carriage sliding, though slides, on rollers secured on the said frame carried by the table, a rack secured on the said carriage, gears for moving the said rack, a crank for controlling the said gears, punches carryingmusical signs and movable on the said carriage, a motor, a pivoted lever acting on the punch carrying the musical sign chosen, a cam carried by a shaft for acting on the said pivoted lever and imparting two movements to the same, an inking table, a pivoted lever acting on the said inking table, an ink reservoir, rotary cylinders transferring ink to the inking table, a clutch for kinematically and momentarily rendering the said motor rigid with the said iirst shaft, and a pedal for actuating the said clutch.
