NIH!lilllllilliiiiiiii im!HHHIIIINIIIIIIIIII MINI f UNITED sTATEs PATENT ornion Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 19, 1906.
Application lerl February 28, 1906. Serial No. 303.510.
To all whom t may concern:-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR P. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bradley, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Imrovements in Tackle-Blocks, of Which the olloWing is a specification.
This invention relates to blocks-of the ty 4e employed in connection With hoisting-tac e, being es .ecially directed` to the block-suspending ook, and `has for its objects to provide a simple and efficient means for permitting convenient handling of the hook in the operation of suspending the block, one Whereby danger ofthe operators hand becoming injured is obviated, and one whereby a rope or other element may be conveniently engaged With the hook to permit hoisting of the block to position for suspension.
With these and other objects in vieW the invention comprises: the novel features of construction "and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings there is shoWn a front elevation of a tackle-block equipped-With a suspending-hook embodying the invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates al toggle-block provided Wi th reeve openings or uides in Which are journaled grooved puleys 3, there being ivoted'to the normally upper end of the bloc by means of a pivoting n member or strap 4 a suspending member or hook 5, theseparts, except as hereinafter explained, being all of the usual or any a propriate construction and material and a apted to perform their ordinary functions.
In accordance With my invention the suspending member or hook 5 is provided With a rearwardly-projecting engaging portionl or member 6, preferably in the form of an auxiliary downturned hook formed integralwith the body portion of the hook 57 adapted to be engaged 1n the operation of engaging the hook 5 With an -overhead su port from Which the block may be sus ended).
Itis customary in t eoperation of'suspend- ,ing tackle-blocks from an overhead support for the o erator to grasp the shank of the hook 5, While engaging the latter With an eye or the like upon the support, it being Well known that under these conditions injury to theoperators hand fre uently results. Furthermore, it has been t e practice heretofore to hoist the block to a position for suspension from the overhead sup ort by means of a rope engaged with the hook 5, this method being objectionable to the extent that after the hook has been engaged With the supportingeye considerable difliculty is experienced in freeing the hoisting-rope from the hook. Under my im roved construction the hoisting-rope may e engaged With the auxiliary hook 6 for hoisting the tackle-block to position for suspension, and the auxiliary hook may be utilized as a handpiece to be gras ed by' the operator While manipulating the ook 5 for engaging the same With the supportinge e.
yHaving thus described my invention, What I claim isl 1. A tackle-block having a suspending 1nlnerber provided-with a projecting engaging 2. A tackle-blockhaving a suspendinghook provided with a rearwardly-projecting auxiliary engagin hook.
In testimony W ereof I aflix my signature in presence of tWo Witnesses.
ARTHUR P. BROWN.
