Description

' 'To ALLYWHOM 1T MAY coNoERN:
@uitrit tstr @kunt @frn G. vWATERS, OF'CINCINNATI, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 82,868, ma september 22, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN LUBRIGATOR.
...vnQ
Be it known that I, G. WATERS, of Cincinnati,'in the county of Hamilton, in the State of Qhio, have invented a new and useful-Improvement in Self-Oilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference t-hereonmakingpart of this specification. v l i i i My invention relates to a method of graduating the discharge of oil from a, lubricator for shafting and machinery, vand consists in providing the tubular conducting-stem or discharge-pipe with a straight, wedge-' shaped, or tapering-threaded screw or plug, having a groove or slot in its outside,which groove is made large at its bottom, and diminishing upward, and'soterminating at the top that'when the same is screwed home, or as far into the top of the stem as it will go, it shall still not entirely close the orifice in the top of the tube,
for it is essentialrtoprovide against the liability or even possibility of cutting off the supply of oil-altogether,
which results often in such disastrous consequences.
A means of nicely and finely graduating the ow of oil is much of a desideratum in very many placs; as, for instance, on the wrist-pin of engine-cranks, where, in addition to the ordinary suctiou of rotating bearings, we have the dashing or throwing-motion; as also on shafting and machinery having a sharp vibratory motion.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a view in perspective of my device, with reservoir attached.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of same, showing the screw or plug inserted about half Way intothe top of stem.
Figures 3 and 4.- represent vthe, detached graduating-screw, which isY threaded upon its outside to t the orifice in topof stemyfig. 2, which is tapped upon its inside.
In the`side of plug (figs. 3 and 4) isshown the slot or groove, mentioned above-,which may be made from the centre ofbottom, a, and terminating at z', at which point the screw is home, and the aperture in :op ot' stem for-passage of oil is very minute. l Y
A good practical size for an ordinary lubricator is represented in the different parts in the drawings.
I claim' as new, and desire to secureA by Letters Patent of the United States- A lubricator, constructed with a graduating-screw or plug, in which is formed a gradually-tapering slot orl groove for regulating and controlling. the discharge ofroil, as described. g G. WATERS.
