wOODWOFlKING-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 7.1905. Serial No. 277,340.
Patented June 19, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MICHAEL ENEIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lamberts Point, Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Woodworking-Tool, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to woodworkingtools, and has for its object to provide for the convenient conversion of an ordinary adz into what is known in the art as a slicker for smoothing or dressing the work after the comparatively rough action of the adz.
. In carrying out the invention it is proposed to provide a novel form of handle to which the adz head or blade may be con 'veniently fitted after being removed from the adz-handle without requiring any change or alteration therein in a position substantially longitudinally of the handle with the cutting edge of the adz-head disposed transversely of the handle in the usual osition of the cutting edge of an ordinary s icker.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, pro ortion, size, and minor details maybe ma e within the scope of the claims without de arting from the spirit or sacrificing any 0 the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is dle having an adz-head fitted thereto in position for use as a slicker. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view; taken throu h the connected portion of the handle and t e adz-head. Fig.3 is a detail perspective view of'an adz-head. Fig. 4 is a perspective view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating the manner of tilting, the adz-head with respect to the handle.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in each and every figure of the drawings.
The handle 1 of the present invention is preferably formed ofwood and is tapered rearwardly to a cylindrical portion 2, terminating in an enlarged knob-terminal 3, the opposite end of the handle being enlarged, as
at 4, to form a polygonal head which is set at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the handle. In the upper face of the head portion 4 there is a recess 5, in which is suitably secured a metallic plate 6, which has a finger or lug 7 provided at its outer end and extending across the adjacent end of the handle, the plate of course being projected beyondthe handle to.produce a suitable space between the finger and the handle. A transverse opening 8 is formed through the head of the handle, and the plate 6 has an opening 9 in alinement with the opening 8, there being an eyebolt 10 extending through the two openings, with its eye 11 at the under side of the handle and its upper threaded end projecting above the plate and provided with a winged nut 12. In rear of the eyebolt there is an oblique opening or recess 13 formed in the un der side of the head of the handle.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings there has been shown an ordinary adz-head' consisting of a blade 14, terminating at one end in a broad sharp cutting edge 15, with side flanges 16 extending along the longitudinal edges of the blade rearwardly from its cutting edge 15. At the other end of the blade there is an eye or socket 17 for the reception of the adzhandle, and a counterbalancing projection 18 extends rearwardly from the eye. the usual form of adz-head.
In fitting the adz-head to the present handle the counterbalancing projection 18 is passed through the eye 11 of the bolt 10 and This is into the oblique seat or recess 13 of the handle, the finger or lug 7 of the fplate 6 beingreceived within the eye 17 o the adz-head, whereupon the nut 12- is screwed down tightly against the plate 6 and the head and handle are thereby rigidly and durably connected, with the blade of the adz-head disposed in a direction substantially longitudinally of the handle and in position to be employed in the capacity of an ordinary slicker.
The intent of the present invention is to do away with the ordinary slicker and permit of an ordinary adz-head being shifted from its usual position transversely of the handle to a position longitudinally thereof for use as a slicker, whereby the cost of the slicker is dispensed with, while the service of both the adz and the slicker is maintained. It will here be explained that the adz-head must of course be removed from the usual adzjection extending I verse opening,
handle prior to being applied. to the present handle, as it is not intended that the adzhead may be fitted transversely across the end of the present handle. In other words, When the adz-head is applied to the present handle it is disposed substantially longitudinally thereof for use as a slicker and not as an adz.
The adz-head may be tilted across the end of the handle, as shown in Fig. 4:, by loosening the nut 12 and inserting a thin block of wood, a metal plate, or the like, such as shown at 19, between the balancing projection 18 and the adjacent face of the handle, so as to cover the entrance to the seat or socket 13, the nut 12 of course being afterward tightened, whereby the handle and the blade will be disposed at such an angle as to permit of the convenient use of the tool in close quarters where it could not be used with the handle and the blade assembled as in Fig. 1.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. The combination of a handle having a projection disposed in advance and extending across the front end of the handle, an eyebolt extending loosely through the handle and provided with a clamping-nut, the eye of the bolt being located at that side of the handle opposite the projection, the handle having an oblique socket formed therein in rear of the eye, and a blade member having one end sharpened to form a cutting edge, its opposite end provided with a projection pass ing through the eye of the bolt and engaging the socket of the handle, the blade being provided with an intermediate laterally-projected eye which is engaged by the projection on the handle.
2. The combination with an adz-head having an intermediate laterally-projected eye and a balancing projection extending therefrom, of a handle having an oblique socket to receive the balancing projection of the adzhead, an eyebolt extending loosely through the handle with the balancing projection extending through the eye, a plate applied to the other face of the handle and having a protransversely across the adjacent end of the handle and engaging the eye of the adz-head, and a clamping-nut carried by the eyebolt for engagement with the plate.
3. As a new article of manufacture, a tool handle provided with a transverse opening extending therethrough adjacent one end and also provided with an inclined socket in one face of the handle in rear of the transa plate applied to the opposite face of the handle with its outer end projecting beyond the adjacent end of the handle and having a lateral projection extending across said end of the handle, an eyebolt extending through the opening in the handle and also through the plate with its eye at the socketed side of the handle, and a clampingnut upon the other end of the bolt, the lateral projection beingadapted to engage the eye of an adz-head and the socket of the handle being adapted to receive the balancing proj ection of the adz-head.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a toolhandle provided with a transverse opening extending therethrough adjacent one end thereof, a plate applied to one face of the handle and provided with a lateral projection spaced from and lying across the adjacent end of the handle, and an eyebolt extending through the opening in the handle and provided Witha clamping-nut engaging the plate, the lateral projection being adapted to engage the eye of an adz-head and the socket of the handle being adapted to receive the balancing projection of the adz-head.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a toolhandle provided with a transverse opening extending therethrough adjacent one end, a plate countersunk in one face of the handle and provided with a lateral projection lying across and spaced from the adjacent end of the handle, said plate also being provided with an opening in alinement with the opening in the handle, and an eyebolt passing through the opening and provided with a clamping-nut engaging the plate, the lateral projection being adapted to engage the eye of an adz-head and the socket of the handle being adapted to receive the balancing projection of the adz-head.
6. A slicker comprising a bit having a transverse eye and a longitudinal projection, a handle provided with aremovablelaterallydisposed projection lying across the forward end of the handle and engaging the eye of the bit, and an eyebolt piercing the handle and receiving the projection of the bit.
7. A slicker comprising a bit having a transverse eye and a longitudinal projection, a removable element applied to one side of the handle and having a lateral projection lapping the forward end of the handle and engaging the eye of the bit, and an eyebolt piercing the handle and the removable element with the projection of the bit received within the eye of the bolt.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
MICHAEL EN RIGHT.
