object of the invention being to effect improvements in or in connection with the shortening or tapering device used in such motions in order to enable the slubbing, roving, or the like to be wound on the usual bobbins with a varying conformation.
My invention will be fully described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a partial front elevation of so much of a slubbing-frame as is necessary to enable my invention to be understood, while Fig. 2 is an end elevation, partly in section, of the mechanism. Fig. 3 shows side elevation of modification in detail, which will be hereinafter more fully referred to. i
In carrying out my invention, and referring more particularly, to Figs. 1 to 3, a, represents the main framing of a slubbing or like frame; 72, the bobbin or lifting-rail; c, the vertical shaft of the builder-motion, having mounted thereon a rope-drum d, to which is connected the usual rope or chain d and weight d, a pinion e gearing intothe usual rack e, connected with the strap e on the driving-cones e and a bevel -wheel f. f is a short shaft upon which is mounted a bevelwheel 7", in gear with the bevel-wheel f, and located immediately behind this bevel-wheel is a pinion g, gearing into a rack g, known as the shortening or tapering rack, the said rack being mounted in one of the oscillating cradles h of the builder-motion. All these parts are of ordinary construction and operate in the usual way, as will be well understood by those conversant with the art.
My improvements particularly relate to the rack g, which in ordinary cases is provided at its extreme free end with a stud and bowl, the latter engaging with a slot of a horizontal character formed in a bracket attached to the bobbin or lifting-rail. In accordance with my inventioninstead of the rack g being formed as just described it has fixed to it at its free end a shaper-plate h, which is formed with more or lesstapering sides h. The plate is secured to the rack by a set-screw or bolt 4' and a pin '11, the latter passing into a hole formed in the rack.

In Fig. 3 the rack g 'is extended and pr-"ovided with a cross-arm a, while the shaperplate 72/ is divided intoseparate portions or halves, both pivoted by the bolt n to the rack, the outer ends of the'plate being adjustably secured to the cross-arm n by. bolts n so that the said platescan be adjusted to have a greater or less angle with the 'rack. The tapering sides h of the plates in each case may be straight or curved, as indicated in the drawings, or they may be made of any other suitable conformation in accordance with the exterior shape it is desired to give the slubbing, roving, or the like on the bobbins on which it is afterward wound, as will be readily understood by those conversant with the art to which my invention relates.
In operation as the bobbin or lifting-rail b rises and falls it carries with it the bracket 7' secured thereto, and consequently causes the bowls 7c and studs k to partake of the movement given to the rail. It should be understood in addition to this that the builder-motion generally, with all its attendant parts, operates in the usual way and that during this motion the cradle h is oscillated so as to raise or lower the right-hand end of the shortening-rack g. It is after this raising or low.- ering, as the case may be, that my invention comes into operation. As the bobbin or lifting-rail rises or falls to the extent of its traverse one or other of the bowls lc comes into contact with the edge of the shaper-plate and causes the righthand end of the rack g to be raised or depressed a little more, so that the ordinary mechanism, which forms no part of my invention, causes the rack through the pinion g to be moved longitudinally in order that at the next motion different points of the shaper-plate it will come in contact with traverse of the lifting-rail, and consequently the shortening of the layers of slubbing or roving on the bobbin will be accomplished.
at I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1; In a building-motion of slubbing, inter mediate and roving and like frames a shortening-rack, a pivoted cradle in which said rack is mounted, a shaper-plate carried by the rack, shafts and spur-gear devices for operating the rack and a bracket secured to the liftingrail, said bracket having located thereon projections between which the shaperplate works substantially as and for the purpose described.
2; In a building-motion of slubbing, intermediate and roving and like frames a shortening-rack, a pivoted cradle in which said rack is mounted, a shaper-plate carried by the rack, means for securing said shaperplate to the rack-shafts and spur-gear devices for operating the rack and a bracket secured to the lifting-rail, said bracket having located thereon projections between which the shaper-plate works substantially as and for the purposes described.
3. In abuilding-motion of slubbing, intermediate and roving and like frames a shortening-rack, a pivoted cradle in which said rack is mounted, a shaper-plate carried by the rack, means for securing said shaperplate to the rack, shafts and spur-gear devices for operating the rack, a bracket secured to the lifting-rail, said bracket having located thereon adjustably-arranged studs, and bowls mounted on said studs between which the shaper-plate works substantially as and for the purposes described.
4. In a building-motion of slubbing, intermediate and roving and like frames a shortening-rack, shafts and spur-gear devices for operating the rack, a transverse slotted arm at one end of the rack, divided shaper-plates secured to said arm at their rear ends and pivoted to the rack at their forward ends in combination with a bracket secured to the lifting-rail, said bracket having located thereon adjustably-arranged studs, bowls mounted on said studs between which the divided shaper-plate works substantially as and for the purposes described.
