To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED L. PICKARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lexington, in the county of Davidson and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Traverse Mechanism for Spinning-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in traverse mechanism for spinning machines.
The primary object of the invention is to provide means which acts upon the usual rail lifting mechanism, to vary the traverse of the yarn.
A further object of the invention is to provide a traverse varying mechanism which may be regulated to vary the movements of the spindle supporting rail.
This construction is designed for the purpose of laying the yarn on the bobbin in such a manner that the bobbin will receive a greater amount of yarn than is usually supplied by the builder mechanism now in use, the yarn being so laid upon the bobbin that while the same is tightly packed thereon, the same is so disposed that the yarn may be readily led off.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of What is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the drawings, 10 designates the frame of a spinning machine, the rails 11 and 19. of said frame being shown. The rail 11 supports the shaft 14L on which is mounted a gear 15, the cams 100, being of the usual construction that actuates the traverse mechanism. One means of operating the shaft 14 is shown in Fig. 10, in which the cam 100 is mounted upon the shaft 1 1 and is disposed to be engaged by the anti-frictional roller pin 45 supported in the rigid part of the frame as at 46, and thus in the path of the cam 11.00 as the shaft 14; is revolved. The bar 12 is provided with the usual chain fork 15 which supports the sheave 16, the chain 17 passing over said sheave and around the chain dog 18 "which is mounted upon the shaft 1.), said shaft 19 being provided with a worm wheel 20 which is driven by the worm shaft 21, the chain being lengthened and shortened by the cams above mentioned. In the usual form of builder mechanism, the chain 17 is passed from the sheave 16 to the chain segment 22 which is secured in the usual manner to the ail actuating shaft E24, the chain passing over the rounded portion 95 of the segment 22 and being attached at the point 26 to said segment. As the mnstruction of the ment and its relation to the rail board is as before stated that of a well known builder mechanism known as the Mason builder motion a further description of the mechanism which actuates the rail 27 is thought to be unnecessary.
The mechanism hereinbcfore described causes a rise and fall of the bobbin supporting rail as the chain 17 is lengthened and shortened by the worm 20. As before stated, the object of the present invention is to inter-pose a traverse varying mechanism between the chain actuating mechanism and the chain segment, for varying the throw of the shaft 24. 'Ihemechanism for accomplishing this result forming the subject matter of the present invention. This mechanism consists of the eccentric 28 which is mounted on the worm shaft 29 of the builder mechanism, the eccentric 28 being disposed at right angles to the gear 30 which meshes with the worm 31 of the shaft 28. The chain fork 15 is provided with an arm 32 which extends parallel to the chain 17 this arm being rigidly supported by the chain fork. A bell-crank lever 33 is pivotally supported at the outer terminal of the arm 32, this lever supporting a plurality of shafts 3a and 35, the shaft 34 extending through the arm 32 forming a pivot for the lever. Arranged on both of these shafts are sheaves 36 and 37, the chain 17 passing under the sheave 36 and over the sheave 37 The vertically extending portion 38 of the lever 33, is provided with a plurality of apertures 39 which receives the connecting rod 40 which is attached to the strap ll of the eccentric 28, the eccentric in this manner transmitting movement to the lever 33 periodically swing ing the same upon its pivot, the backward movement of the extension 38 of said lever, that is its movement in a direction toward the actuating eccentric causing a rise of the terminal 43 of the lever which shortens the traverse actuating chain 17 It will be noted by this construction, that during each winding of the chain 17 by the chain dog 18, said chain will be gradually shortened while the rocking of the lever 33 by the eccentric 28, will cause an alternating pulling and re leasing of the chain and thus cause the feeding of the yarn as illustrated in Figs. 8 and 9. That is the traverse mechanism will cause the yarn to be fed. to the bobbin, first in a continuous upward winding, then as the traverse varies, a certain portion of the yarn is laid upon the winding initially formed and so on until the entire cop is built, thus producing a cop in which the yarn is packed tight and in such a manner that it may be easily led ofi from the bobbin.
The many advantages of a traverse motion varying mechanism of this character will be clearly apparent as it will be noted that the construction may readily be applied to the type of builder now in use, without altering the construction of the builder and that the same will produce a winding in which the yarn mass is so built that the yarn may be readily led from the bobbin without danger of breakage regardless of the quality of the yarn, the mechanism thus while producing a firm cop also producing a cop in which the yarn is applied to the same in the building without danger of breakage and in which the yarn may be led from the cop without danger of breakage.
What is claimed is 1. In a builder mechanism, a rail lifting means, said means including a cam actuated chain, a chain fork, a sheave supported by said fork, said chain passing over said sheave, an arm supported by said chain fork, a bell crank lever fulcrumed to said arm, said lever being provided with two sheaves disposed in the path of said chain, and means for rocking said lever with respect to said arm to vary 'the traverse.
2. In a builder mechanism, a rail lifting means, said means including acam actuated chain, a chain fork, a sheave supported by said fork, said chain passing over said -sheave, an arm supported by said chain fork, a bell crank lever fulcrumed to said arm, said lever being provided with two sheaves disposed in the path of said chain, and means actuated by the rail lifting mechanism for rocking said lever with respect to said arm to vary the traverse.
3. In a builder mechanism, a rail lifting means, said means including a cam actuated chain, a chain fork, a sheave supported by said fork, said chain passing over said sheave, an arm supported by said chain fork, a bell crank lever fulcrumed to said arm, said lever being provided with two sheaves disposed in the path of said chain, and cam means actuated by the rail lifting mechanism for rocking said lever with respect to said arm to vary the traverse.
