CHARLES I/V.
CONRADT, OF WEST CHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED ASH SIFTER AND BUCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 28, 1904. Serial No. 238.609.
Patented June 12, 1906.
T0 ctZZ whom it may, concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs W. CoNRADT, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Chester, in the county of Chester, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Ash Sifter and Bucket; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to ash-sifters, and more particularly to portable ash-sifters, and has for its object to provide an ash-sifter so constructed that flying dust will be prevented.
Another object is to provide a sifter which will be efi icient while being extremely simple and which may be made at a minimum cost.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific construction shown may be made and that any suitable materials may be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the structure shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the inner member. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the outer member.
Referring now to the drawings, the present sifter comprises an outer receptacle 5 and an inner receptacle 6, both being cylindrical in form and the former being about twice the height of the latter.
Secured within the receptacle 6 at the lower portion thereof are a plurality of vertically-extending metallic strips 7, which have their upper end portions turned at right angles to extend inwardly. The distance be tween these angular portions, which are indicated at 8, and the top of the receptacle 6 is approximately equal to the height of the inner receptacle 5, the latter when in operative position resting upon the angular portions 8.
Secured to the inner receptacle adjacent to its bottom and extending laterally therefrom is a handle 9,,which extends outwardly of the receptacle 6 through a horizontal slot 10 therein. Formed in the wall of the receptacle 6 and extending vertically from the slot 10 to the upper edge of the receptacle there is a slot 11, disposed midwaybetween the ends .wardly and then toward of the slot 10, and the slot 11 is of a size for the passage of the handle 9 therethrough. It will thus be apparent that the inner receptacle may be placed in operative position by inserting it in the open top of the receptacle 6, the handle 9 being permitted to pass downwardly through the slot 11 to the slot 10, and it will be seen that if the handle is moved longitudinally of the slot 10 the inner receptacle 5 will be rotated, or rather oscillated.
The receptacle 5 is provided with a foraminous bottom 12, and the receptacle 6 is provided with a cap 13 for its open end. Extending downwardly from the cap and into the inclosure of the receptacle 5 are a plurality of agitating-pins 14.
The receptacle 6 is provided with ears 16 at its sides, in which are engaged the ends of a bail 15, by means of which the sifter may be carried from place to place.
' Formed in the side of the receptacle 6 adjacent to the bottom thereof there is a horizontally-extending opening 17, and extending upwardly and downwardly from this opening at the ends thereof are slits 18, the metal between these slits being bent outthe center of the opening, as shown, to form guides 19. A closure 20 is provided for the opening 17, consisting of a plate somewhat longer than the opening and having a finger-piece 21 at one end, the plate being of a width to closely fit between the outwardly-extending portions of the guides 19. As shown, the ends of the plates extend beyond the ends of the opening 17, so that a dust-tight closure is formed.
When the cap 13 is in operative position, it closes the slot 11, and it will be apparent that the inner receptacle may be removed and that the outer receptacle maybe then used as a bucket.
What is claimed is 1. In an ash-sifter, the combination with an outer receptacle having an inverted-T- shaped slot extending downwardly from its upper edge to a point above the bottom thereof, of supporting-strips secured at intervals against the inner face of the receptacle below the slot, and having their upper end portions bent inwardly in a common horizontal plane, a sifting member located within the outer receptacle upon the inwardlybent portions of the strips, a handle carried by the sifting member and extending outwardly through the horizontal portion of the IIO T-shaped slot, and being of a size to just pass through the stem of the slot, and a cover removably engaged over the outer receptacle and extending downwardly to close the whole of the stem of the T-shaped slot, said handle being movable longitudinally of the horizontal portion of the slot to oscillate the inner receptacle.
2. An ash-Sifter comprising an outer receptacle having a door in its lower portion, and having an inverted-.T-shaped slot in its upper portion diametrically opposite from the door, the stem of the slot opening through the upper edge of the receptacle, supports for the sifting member, a handle carried by the sifting member and extending outwardly through the horizontal portion of the slot, and being of a size to just pass through the stern of the slot, said handle be= ing movable longitudinally of the horizontal portion of the slot to oscillate the sifting member, a cover fitted upon the outer receptacle and closing the end of the slot, and a bail pivoted to the outer receptacle at points midway between the vertical plane of the door and the slot, said handle of the sifting member extending beyond the outer receptacle for manipulation to move the receptacle with respect to the bail.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES WV. OONRADT.
