IMPROVED SIDE-SADDL TREES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: y o I ,A
Be it known that I, JOHN C. MILLR, of Danville, in the county' of Boyle, and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Side-Saddle Trees; and I do hereby' declare the following to be a full, clear, and ekact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which is made a part of this specification. o
In the usual method of making side-saddle trees, the spring or pommel is left tobe attached by the journeyman saddler,.after the tree goes to him for completion as avsaddle. It is in that-case formed ofseveral thicknesses of askirting-leather, hardened andstiffened by means of tacks, thread, and paste, and lthe time required forits construction is generally from four to ve hours', making a very tedious and expensive operation, and producing a comparatively'imperfect article.
My invention consists in making the spring or pommel ofthe requisite width a part of the tree, as originally manufactured, and of the same or similar material.
In the drawing- Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section through the head of a side-saddle tree, omade according to,
my invention, and
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof.
A may represent the body of the tree; B B, the fork, and I, the spring or near horn, all of which parts l are constructed in the usual way,^and of the ordinary material. D E F G are iron straps, bent to conform A to the shape of the parts of the tree to which they are respectively applied, and attached by means of the rivets H H. .I
C represents a piece of oak or other suitable wood, cut to the proper size, and 'steamed and -bent to the form required, which is secured between the straps Dand F,' and the top of the forks B, by the rivets H, as represented in iig. 1. This piece forms the o horn c and the front'orkpommel c', iig. 1, and its lform and relative size may be varied as may be required for the different forms of each. A
The piece C, after being attached, is provided with'a covering of canvas, and glue-painted, similarly to the other parts of the tree, or said covering and painting may be done previous to its attachment, when preferred.
I am aware` that the horns of side-saddle trees have been made of wood with the grain lengthwise, and make no claim to that feature; but so far. as Ilam informed, no tree, prior to my invention, has been provided in its manufacture with a front orpommel made of wood, as herein described. I A
I therefore claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-' y 1. As a new articleof manufacture, a side-saddle tree, in which the front or pommel c' is formed at the same time and of a similar material tothe body of the' tree, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combined off horn and pommel C, formed from wood with the grain lengthwise, by cutting, steaming, and bending, and attached, substantially'in the manner described. Y
To the above specicaton of my improvement in side-saddle trees, I have signed my hand, this 6th day of May, A. D. 1868. v
i JOHN o. MILLER.
