Description

vN. PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON D C JRGEN L. JRGENS, 0E NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
Letters Patent No. 82,325, dated September 22, 1868.
IEPRovED FIRE-ESCAPE digs tlgehule referat it tu time More ttmtmxh making'aatt at tigt same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONGERN Be it known that I, JRGEN L. JRGENS, of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Escapes; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others'skilled in the Vart to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which-'- Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved attachment, with a part broken away, and
Figure 2 represents aplan view of the carriage.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a convenient, cheap, and reliable fire-escape for buildings.
It consists of a car, provided with axles, made adjustable in the direction of the length of the same, and connected together by a shaft, having a right and left-hand screw-thread, by which the said axles may be expanded or contracted, as it is moved up or down inclined ways placed outside of the building, convenient to the windows of the same, to admit of the inmates of the building entering the ear as it is passed down from one window to another. a
A represents the carriage, provided with grooved wheels, B, the axles of which are supported adjustably Y in the slots C, in the sides of the carriage.
The axles are connected together by a shaft, D, provided with a right and left-hand screw, by the turning of which they may be moved to or from each other.
The said shaft is provided with a piuion-spur wheel, and cranks for actuating it'.
Eend E represent inclined ways or tracks, whereon the carriage is intended to be moved up and down, provided at the side of a house in a suitable position to admit the carriage to pass some of the windows in descending, affording the inmates an Opportunity to escape into it iu times of danger by fire.
The square ends, F, of the carriage are intended to work against the guides Gr, to prevent the cud of the carriage from moving irregularly.
The carriage may be' raised by cords and weights, or .by any other suitable means, and maintained at or near a window ready foruse, or there may, if preferred, be provided as many carriages as there are windows in the path of the guides. Each carriage will, to some extent, represent the appearance of a balcony.
When it is desired to make use of a carriage for descending, the same may bereadily accomplished by turning the screw-shaft in the right direction to dpaw the' axles together, as will be readily understood.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The carriage A, provided with the adjustable grooved pulleys B, and operating shaft D, in combination A, with the inclined ways E E, substantially as and for the purpose described.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 27th day of June, 1868.
' JRGEN L. JRGENS.
