UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL R. HOLDEMAN, OF ESKRIDGE, KANSAS.
SASH- LOCK- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. June 12, 1906.
Application filed August 17, 1905. Serial No. 274,546.
to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to sash-fasteners. One object of the invention is to provide an exceedingly simple, inexpensive, durable,
and efficient sash-fastener embodying such characteristics that the windows will be locked automatically when closed.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a window-sash fastener wherein spring-actuated means is employed for effecting an automatic locking of the windows upon closing of the latter, whereby the possibility of retiring without looking the windows is positively obviated.
With these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanyin drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view through upper and lower windowsashes, illustrating my improved fastener in elevation and in locked position. Fig. 2 is a similar view illustrating the lower window slightly raised and the fastening means unlocked. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the castings. Fig.4 is a similar view of the other casting. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the turn-button. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the flanged lock-plate. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the lock-plate.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 designates an upright casting provided with a foot 2, having one or more perforations 3, through which may be passed a suitable fastening 4 for the securing of the upright fastener 1 to the bottom rail 5 of the upper sash 6. It will be seen that one edge of the upright portion of the casting converges -the flanged portion 23 of the said ,toward the opposite ed e thereof and that the extreme upper end of the casting 1 is provided with a lateral projection 6, having a depending lug 7, designed to cooperate with the flanged plate 8, mounted for rotation upon the casting 9, whose foot 10 is provided with one or more perforations 11 for the reception of suitable fastenings 12, whereby the said casting 9 may be secured upon the top rail 13 of the lower sash 14.
The casting 9 is provided with a notch 15, resulting in a shoulder 16 at the base of the notch and the converging edge 17 of the casting. Secured to the casting 9 or formed therewith is a short bracket 18, provided with an eye 19 in its extremity in which is rotatably mounted the shank 20 of a turn nut 21, and upon which shank 20 is fixedly secured, by means of a suitable fastener 22, the aforesaid flange-plate 8, being disposed above the bracket 18 and with the flange 23 thereof extending throughout only a portion of its edge to provide an opening 24, wliereby p ate 8 may pass back of the depending lug 7 of the projection 6 to lock the windows against opening, as will be more clearly understood by a further reading of this specification.
Connected by means of a suitable fastening 25 to the lower end of the shank 20 of the turn-button 21 is an arm 26, to which latter is connected one end 27 of a helical spring 28,
encirclin the lower end of the shank 20 of the turnutton 21, and whose upper end 29 is secured to the aforesaid bracket 18. It will thus be seen that the helical sprin 28 encircles the lower end of the shank 20 o the turn-button 21 between the arm 26 and the bracket 18, this spring being the means for automatically operating my improved fastener.
Formed with the shank 20 immediately beneath the under face of the button-head 21 is a projection 30, which is designed to cooperate with a shoulder 16 of the casting 9 to hold the plate 8 out of engagement with the depending lug 7 of the casting 1 against the action of the said helical spring 28. In other words, when the sashes are locked together, as shown in Fig. 1, and it is desired to open the windows it is simply necessary to rotate the turn-button 21, so as to present the lug 30 of the shank 20 of the turn-button against the shoulder 16 of the casting 9, in which position the head 21 of the turn-button lies parallel with the plane of the casting 9 with the IIO flange-plate 8 out of engagement with the depending lug 7 of the casting 1, when the windows may be raised or lowered with respect to each other. Now in order to lock the windows the upper sash is moved 'to its proper position, and the lowering of the lower sash will cause one end of the head 21 of the turn-button to strike against the projecting portion 6 of the casting 1 and lift the proj ection 30 of the shank 20 of the turn-button from behind the shoulder 16 of the casting 9, when the spring 28, which was placed under tension upon the unfastening of the windows, will cause an automatic revolution of the turn-button and throw the opening 24 of the plate 8 into operation with the depending lug 7 of the casting 1 until the flange 23 is revolved behind the lug 7 of the casting 1, when the fastening will be such as to prevent opening of the windows from the outside.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my invention is of an exceedingly simple nature and that it will positively and automatically lock the windows upon the closing of the latter to their respective positions, whereby burglars or other persons on the outside cannot open the windows and whereby the windows will not be left unfastened accidentally when closed.
What is claimed is 1. A window-fastener comprising oppositely-disposed castings, one of the castings having a projection provided with a depending lug, the other castin having a bracket, a turn-button mounted for rotation in said bracket, an arm secured to the lower end of said turn-button, a helical spring encircling the lower end of said turn-button and engaged at its opposite ends to the said bracket and the said arm, a flanged locking-plate secured to the turn-button, means for holding the turn-button in one position against the action of said spring, the said spring being adapted to throw the said locking-plate into engagement with the aforesaid lug of the first named casting when the castings are brought into alinement.
2. In a sash-fastener, upper and lower sashes, a casting secured to the upper sash and provided with a depending lug at its upper end, another casting secured to the lower sash andprovided with a shoulder at its up.- per-end, a bracket secured to the second casting, a turn-button having its shank rotatably mounted in said bracket, an arm rigidly connected to the lower end of the shank of the button, a helical spring encircling the lower end of said shank and connected atits opposite end to said bracket and said arm, the upper end-of said shank of the turn-button having a projection for engagement with the shoulder of the second casting to hold the turn-button in one position against the action of said spring, and a flanged lookingplate adapted for rotation with the shank of said turn-button whereby the flange of the plate may engage behind the aforesaid lug of the first casting automatically when the projection of the turn-button is lifted from engagement with the shoulder of the second casting.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
