.To wl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT PITMAN acitizen of the Ulted States, residing at the city 0f1 ti1ade1phia, in the @misty of hilsdelphia.
5 and State of* Pennsylvania, have invented certain new vand useful Improvements in Cen- .triugal Pumps, of which the following is a specification. v
My invention has relation to` a centrifugal particularly to means connected therewith and adapted to ermit of the use of-a loose packing or the dlspensin With such packing or the pump-shaft in sai type of pumps.
The principal objects of my in'ifentionare, first, to relieve the shaft of a centrifugal pump' from the friction and Wear at the omt -Where the same turns in a packing, andp thereby to [extend considerably the usefulness of such a zo pump; second, to provide for this purposethe pum -housing with a chamber interposed between the packing and piston; third, to provide the shaft o f such a pump' with Wings orV blades adapted to rotate inthe chamber of they pump. to remove Watertherefrom, and thereby to revent the same reaching the packing, an ,fourth, to arrange the hub ortionof the iston ofthepump of a widt to `cover the c amber toprevent the 4direct inflow of water to the same and to form in conjunction with the housing of the ump' an annular o enng through Which t e Water enterin t e chamber 1s discharged' by the blades t erein. 3 5 The nature and -scope of my invention will be more fully understood from thefollowing description, taken in connection with the ac' com anyingdrawings', forming' part hereof, inw'chy Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional viewof a centrifugal pump, illustrating in side eleva-'1V` Y tion bla es secured-to the pump-shaft anda chamber formed inthe pump-housing and covered bythe hub yortion of the piston'. 45\ adapted to receive t e blades embodying main features of my said invention; and Fig.
2` is a cross-sectional view through thesaid pump, illustrating in front elevation the Wings .arranged on the pump-shaft andV the fan- Referring to the dravvin s, a and a re sent the sectional "pumpousing, in .W 'ch'4 is adapted to rotate afan-Wheel r'piston 1),' ldriyenv by'a shaft c, supported by an exten: sion a2 of the section a. This extension-a, alsoforms a stuffing-box, in which isfplaced pump; and in such connection it relates more 4 i the chamber iston b, as will be readily understood in. con'- by means of dispensed wit the pacln'ng d and is held in position therein yby a gland e, adjustably connected With the stuffing-box b means of boltsf. An oil-cup g, secured tot e extensiona?, serves to lubricate the shaft c by meansr of a duct ,as shown in Fig. 1. In the section a of the vousing of the pump and between the iston b and packing d is arrangeda chamber of a diameter not lar er than the hub portion b" of the iston b, w 'ch is located a slight distance om the chamber h', so as to form in-conjunction, with the-section a of the pump-housing an annular o ening h', Which `connects the chamber h with' the large chamber4 alsof the pump in which the piston b' rotates. The
chamber h serves to receive blades orvanes 'i which by means of their hub i are connecte with .the shaft c and the angular position of which is such as to remove Water` entering the chamber h when the shaft c is rotated in th'e direction indicated by theI arrow.. in" 1. When the shaft aand pistonb are rotate by means not shown, water is conducted into'the chamber a3 of the pump-housing'through the inlet a? and discharged therefrom through the outlet a?. The Water by enterin' the chamber c1,a is' prevented from. direct y entering h by the hub portion bl of the 1unction with Fig. 1 of the drawings,'and onl a comparatively small portion of the water Wi l find Aits Way into the chamber h through the annular opening h. This Water, however, the vanes or Wings i is as quickly dischar ed ,from the chamber h as the water entersrt e same, andhence the'packing d 1s entirely relieved from the pressure o this water. By this arrangement the water is p revented fiom reaching the through the same' an thus the packing can be arranged-very cose or may be entirely Such Aa loosel packing re-- lievesthe shaft vc from wear. and friction which is due to atight packing s t ereof, said pistonfa apted w'henrotated to acking duor escap- ,andhence the v usefulness of the pump 1s considerably lengthenedi and-'fthe force to actuatethe same de. creased. v lrlaying thus -chamber so as to 2. In a centrifugal pump, a housing having4 -chambers of varying diameters communicat-y ing with each other, avshaft, a iston hav-inge a hub portion and vanes carrie by said shaft and arranged respectively in the lar e and small chambers thereof, said piston a apted When rotated to force Water into and from the larger of said chambers, and its hub portion adapted to prevent the direct inflow of Water into the smallerl chamber, and said vanes adapted to continually remove the Water entering thevsmal-ler chamber from the large chamber by forcin the same'back into sald old the smaller chamber substantiallyfree from fluid.y
3. In a centrifugal pump, a housing having chambers of varying diameters communicating With each other, a shaft carried by and terminating Within said housing, a acki'n arranged in said housing and surroun gsai shaft, 'a' piston having a hub portion and vanes se arated from the same carried by said shan t and arranged respectively in the large and small chambers thereof, said piston adapted Whenrotated to force Water into and from the largerof said chambers, and' itshub portion adapted to prevent the direct inii'owof the Water into the smaller chamberand' said p vanes adapted' to continually remove Water entering thesmaller chamber by forcing the same back into said larger chamber so as to prevent the Water from reaching and escaping through said packing by holding t e smaller chamber substantially free from fluid.
.4. In a centrifugal pump, a housing having chambers of varying diameters communicating With each other, a shaft carried by and terminating within said housing, a packing arran ed in said housing and surroundmg said shaft, a piston having a hub portion an vanes se ara-ted from the same carried by said sha and arranged respectively in the large and sm-all chambers thereof and said hub portion in conjunction Witlrsaid housing adapted to form an annular open-in connecting the large chamber With the sma l'erchamber, saidpiston ada ted when rotated to force Water into and fiom the larger of said chambers, and its hub portion adapted to prevent the direct inflow of the Waterinto the smaller chamber and said vanes adapted to continually remove Water kentering the smaller chamber through said opening by forcing the same back into saidl larger chamber so a-s to prevent the Water from reaching and escaping through said' packing bl holding .the smaller chamber substantia ly freeV from lluid. l
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set V`my signature in the presenceof two subscribing Witnesses.
