To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ABRAHAM KNOBEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentuck have invented a new and useful Electric railroad-Gate, of which the followin r is a specification.
his invention relates especially to railway-crossing gates; and the objects of my :0 improvement are simplicity of construction, comparative inexpensiveness of manufacture, safety, economy, and ease of 0 oration. The casing 1, the longer gate 2, and the shorter gate 3 constitute the body of the invention. The gate 2 is mounted on ,a-pivotshaft 4, which passes transversely through the upper part of easing 1. The shorter or sidewa k gate 3 is mounted on studs 16 and 17 on the sides of easing l. A gear-wheel 14 is mounted on shaft 4 on the outside on one 3 5 side of the casing, and a corresponding gcarwheel of the same size and. moshing with gear-wheel 14 is mounted on stud i6 and rigldl secured to gate 8.

The electromotpr 18 is electrically connected with a battery or other source of power through a starting and current-roversmg switch 18, which may be located in the watcluhouse or any suitable distant place. The electrornotor is referahly of the serieswound type and pro crably driven by a pri mary battery which may be placed in the Watch-house The gate 2 is provided at its inner end with counterweights 13, so that it is perfectly balaneed, and thus requires very little power to operate.
The switch 18 may be of any form usually used and need therefore not be minutely dcscrihed. It is provided with a lever 24, a handle 22, and stops to limit the motion of the handle, as shown in Fig. 5.
Theo eration of the device will now be understood If the gate is to be closed, lever 24 is pushed around by the operator to the proper stop, as indicated, which starts the motor in the direction to rotate shaft 4, so as to lower the free ends of the gates. If the gate is to be opened, lever 24 is pushed around to the opposite stop, as indicated, which causes the motor to run in the 0 pcsite direction and raises the free ends 0 the gates. When lever 24 is placed between the steps or on the neutral point, the motor-sir cult is opened and the gate remains at rest. It will be seen that with this arrangement the operator in the watch-house has complete control of the "etc. If he has started it toward the closctl pusitlon and a vehicle should be passing, he may immediately re verse the motor and raise the ute or sto it and hold it stationary until tllo vehicle lies passed. The same will occur when the gate has reached the perpendicular position when the portion carryin the counterweights 13 will strike a s ringufier 23 and stop the gate from furt wer movement. In this case also the frictiomclutch will act to revent destruction or derangement of t e gearing. The clutch member 5 may be adjusted against gear 6, so as to produce sufficient force to opcrate the gates a ainst wind or the accumu lation of snow an ice or to provide for other exi encies.
