Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL ENGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holcombe, in the county of Chippewa and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Combined Gram-Tank andv Shelter-Top, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved combined grain-tank and shelter-top, the same being in the nature of an attachment to ordinary farm-wagons; and the object of the invention is to simplify and improve the construction and operation of this class of devices. p With these ends in view the invention consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred foim of embodiment of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that the right is reserved to any changes, alterations, and modifications to which recourse may be had within the scope of the invention and without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the efficiency of the same.

The improved device constituting this invention is composed, essentially, of two side members l 1 adapted to be hingedl connected, as by means of ordinary leafinges 2 2, with the sides 3 3 of an ordinary wagonbox or with the extensions of said sides, as shown in the drawings, where 4 designates the wagon-box and 5 the running-gear supporting the same.

The members I l, which coperate to form the grain-tank or the wagon-top, as the case may be, may be constructed of sheet metal or any other suitable material or combination of materials. Thus, for instance, it

would befeasible to construct them of Wooden frames having a covering of canvas or other suitable material `stretched thereupon; but sheet metal is the material preferably employed, it being reinforced by a framework or by braces of wrought-iron bars, angle-iron, or the like. Each of said members 1 l is composed of end pieces 6 6, having rounded upper or outer ends, as shown at 7, and side pieces 8, which are curved to t upon the end pieces,

with which they may be connected by bolt-- ing, riveting, or in any suitable, convenient, and durable manner. It is desired to be distinctly understood that no limitation is made with regard to the precise construction of the side members 1 1 or to the precise shape of said side members, provided only that said side members when folded together, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, shall coperate to constitute` a wagon-top or tent, as it is sometimes designated.

The members l 1 are provided at their free edges with hooks 9, adapted to overlap when the members are folded together for the passage of a locking-bar 10, whereby the free edges of the members I 1 are firmly secured or locked together, the joint being overlapped by the locking-bar, as shown, so as to prevent the admission of water. It is preferred to divide the locking-bar into two separate pieces, as shown in Fig. l in dotted lines, where each of said pieces is designated 10a in order that said pieces may be independently used for-the purpose of supporting the members I when extended to form a graintank, as shown in Fig. 2. By reference to said figure it will be seen that the end ieces 6 of the members 1 are each provided) with an upwardly-disposed hook I l near its hinged end and with a downwardly-disposed hook 12 intermediate its hinged and free ends. By placing one of the locking-bars .10a in engage-A ment with the hooks Il while the side members l are being unfolded the lends of said locking-bar will be caused to engage the hooks 12, thereby supporting the side members l 1 in extended position, as will be very readily seen by reference to Fig. 2.

A rIhev end pieces 6 6 of the side members l are provided with hinged doors 13, provided upon their inner sides with latching devices 14, whereby they may be retained in a closed position. the device may, when desired, be utilized for the passage of the reins, this being especially desirable in stormy Weather.

When the side members 1 1 are extended to constitute the sides of a grain-tank, as shown in Fig. 2, end-gates, as 17, are usually provided, said end-gates being slidably connected with the end pieces 6 by means of suitable cleats 18.

The operation and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection With the drawings hereto annexed.

` The `device constituting the invention may be constructed at a moderateexpense and may be easily applied to an ordinary farm- WfligOIl by fastening means-such as screws, bolts, or the like-which will admit of its being detached when desired. vThe side members 1 1 When extended and combined with the end-gates 17 will constitute a grain-tank of great 4capacity and which will `be absolutely tight, thus preventing waste of grain by leakage or overflow. When the side members are thus extended, the doors 13 will be secured in lposition by the end-gates, and said doors also preferably overlap the end pieces 6 upon the inner sides of the latter, so that they will readily resist any outward strain. A device of the class described including a pair of hingedly-su ported semibox-like members having over apping hooks upon their free edges and oppositely-faced hooks upon their ends, in combination with a locking-bar adapted for alternate engagement with said overlapping and said oppositelyfaced hooks.

7. A device of the class described including a pair of semibox-like grain-tank members having hinges connected therewith and' provided at the ends thereof with doors interiorly overlapping the end pieces of the boxlike members.

8. A pair of semibox-like grain-tank members having hinges connected therewith and provided at the ends thereof with' doors having peep-holes and shutters for the same.

9. A pair of semibox-like grain-tank members hingedly supported upon the upper edges of the sides of a wagon-box and provided at their front ends with doors and with latching means for connecting the free ends of the doors when the grain-tank members are elevated to an upright position.

10. A pair of semibox-like grain-tank members hingedly supported upon the upper edges of the sides of a wagon-box and lhaving door members at the ends thereof, ymeans for v supporting said members in ,extended position, and an end-gate adapted for engagement with the ends of the grain-tank members and with the lower edges of the doors connected therewith.

11. A pair of semibox-like grain-tank members hingedly supported upon the upper edges of the sides of a wagon-box, said tank members having permanent end pieces, means for supporting said members in extended position, and an end-gate engaging the ends of said grain-tank members.

12.
