FRANCIS MARION HOBBS. OF HALESBQRO, TEXAS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
'satenteoi May 29, 19 36.
Application filed October Z1 1905. Serial No. 283,782.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS lVlARION Hones, a citizen of the United States, residing at Halesboro, in the county of Red River and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Alarm, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to alarms for general use.
into through the window.
.l/Vhile the prime object had in view pertains to alarms for windows, it is to construct a device of this character adapted for use in conjunction with any movable part and indicate the movement by ringing of a bell Stir tachment.
W ith the above objects in view I have in vented the simple, novel, and improved alarm shown by the accompanying drawings, and hereinafter described. in detail.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view showing sectional portions of the upper and lower sashes of a window with my improved alarm applied thereto, the same being illustrated in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a similar view looking at the other side of the alarm. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the alarm shown applied. In the view portions only of the sashes are shown. Fig. 4 is adetail sectional view taken transversely through the rubbcrtired 0peratingwheel, the combined ratchet and tappet wheel, and the pivotal lever. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the combined ratchet and tappet wheel, and Fig. 6 is a side I elevation of the operatingnvheel.
In the preferred form of my im roved alarm I employ a base a'plate A, raving spaced lugs or standards "B, providing piv otal support therebetween at Cfor a suitablyfashioned lever D. The lever is pivoted to the lugs B, leaving a short finger end E and a longer curved end F.
On the base-plate A, I secure a. suitable spring G, having its free end G disposed between the lugs B and restin with tension against the under side of the nger end ill-of the leverl). 3 'i For adjusting position or limiting movenient cf the lever ID, I arrange thereon a screw H, dis osed through its longer end F, as shown in *igs. 1 and 2. The screw is provided with any suitable "operating-headl and arranged with its inner end contacting the spring G, though obviously the screw may be arranged to contact any portion of"- is apparent that pivotal movement of the. longerv or curved end F of the lever D may be adjusted as required.
In further carrying out my invention. I provide a-transverse pin or journal J at the free end of the curved portion. F oi the lever D and arrange thereon a suitable wheel K,
having a rubber or other friction-rim L;
The pin J provides support for a wheel M, havine tappet-teeth N. It will be noticed that the wheel M is located on the pin J, between the wheel K and the lever B, and that its face or side adjacent to the wheel K has...
a circular series of ratchetteeth O. (See Figs. 4 and 5.)
The Wheel K is provided with a suitable yielding dog or pawl arranged for enga ing the ratchet-teeth O on the tappetrwhee" M,- and the same mayconslst of a pinP, arranged in a suitable transverse opening Q.
The pin P-is held in the opening spring R and its inner end held'yieldingly in contact with the ratchet-teeth O on the tap pet-wheel K by elasticity of the spring, as will be understood. On the longer orcurved end F of D, I suitably support a bell S, adapted to be sounded by a head T (see Fig. 2) at one end of an arm U, pivoted at Vto the lever D. The arm U is extended beyond its pivotpoint, as at W, (see Fig. 3,) for engagement by the tappet wheel teeth N, whereby oscillating motion is im arted to the arm U and an alarm elieote It is intended that the tappet-wheel M shall be held against rotation in one directionin other words, that the friction or on the base-plate A. With this construoti on Qbya the lever.
tion indicated by the arrow in Figs. 1 and 2,
and that dur ng reverse rotation ofthe flVhGE-l K the pin P shall slide from toctll.'to tooth Q on the wheel M through yieldin aeiz'o'n of the springdt. Theextended end i of the oscil lating lever U is yieldingly heldinto ngagement with the tdppt-wheel teeth N b y means of spring W, having one'end secured thereto and its other end secured to the arm D,
The construction of my improved alarm will be understood from the above descri tion. In the use thereof on a window tie plate A is secured to the upper right-hand cover of the lower sash, with the longer or curved end F of the arm D extending thereabove and backwardly, holding the operating-wheel K against the adjacent side rail of impart oscillating action in the arm U, causing its headed end T to strike and intermittently sound the bell. ,Movement of the longer end F of the arm D toward the upper window-sash may be adjusted by means of the screw H, and when it is desired to r ise or lower the sashes without sounding t ,e bell the wheel K is adjusted back'wardlytrom its 0 crating position by simple pressure on the 0 s orter or fin er end E of the arm D. The
screw H has urther usefulness in serving as a stop to prevent movement of the arm D, carrying the operating-wheel'out of working osition when the upper sash is completely owered. A
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 3 1. The combination in an alarm, of an arm pivoted between its ends to a suitable support, leaving one end extended, providing a nnger en'd, whereby to operate the lever, an operating-wheel. at the other end of the arm, a ta pet-wheel on said arm-driven through ratchet-means upon rotation in one direction of the operating-wheel, a suitably-supported bell, an oscillating arm having one end in contact with the tappet-wheel, andits other end adapted to strike the bell, a spring holding the oscillating arm under tension, and a spring under the finger end of the pivoted arm holding same yieldingly elevated, sub- 'stantially as described.
2. The combination in an alarm, of a suitable base, an arm pivoted between its ends, to the base, an operating-wheel at one end of said arm, a tappet-wheelat the same end of said arm, ratchet -teeth on the tappet-wheel, a yielding dog on the operating-wheel, the dog being arranged in engagement with said ratchet-teeth, a suitably-sup orted bell, an
oscillating arm having pivota support on the pivoted arm, the oscillating arm having one end in engagement with the tappet-wheel and its other and adapted to strike the bell, a spring holdin the pivoted arm-under tension, a spring hol ing the oscillating arm under tension, and means limiting movement of the pivoted arm, substantially as described.
3. The combination in analarm, of a suit-' able base, an arm pivoted between-its ends to the base, an operating-wheel at one-end of said arm, a tappet-wheel at the same end of the arm, ratchet-teeth on the tappet-wheel, a pin on the operating-wheel held yieldingly in engagement with said ratchet-teeth, a bell having support on the pivoted arm,-an oscillating arm having support on the pivoted arm, springs holding the'pi-votedand oscillating arms under tension, the oscillating arm having one end'in engagement with the tapnetwheel, and 'its other end adapted to strike the bell, and a screw onthe pivoted arm adapted for adjustment limiting movement of the pivoted arm, substantially as described.
I FRANCIS MARION HOBBS.
