* UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 29, 1906.
Application filed August 18, 1905. Serial No. 274,802.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED J. ODoNNELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Studs or.
Buttons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in studs or buttons; and it consists in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as will be fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of this invention is to provide a stud or button to be attached to the cloth Without the use of buttonholes or stud-openm s. I
ligure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view showing the two parts in connected position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the needle member shown in position with the cloth. Fig. 4 is a central sectional view of the head detached from the needle member.
In the construction of my invention I provide a base 5, to which is ri 'dly secured a needle 6. The end 7 of sai needle is provided with a recess 8 and terminating into a needle-point 9. 'The end portion 7 (see Fig. 3) is of a diameter sli htly smaller than the remaining portion of t e needle, the urpose of which is to permit the said need e to be drawn from the cloth without obstruction or tearing the cloth. The member 10 consists of a wall 11, having an inlet 12, constructed from the crimped ends 13 of the wall and acting as a fideway for the insertion of the needle 6 wit the member 10, and securely riveted to the same are springs '14, their one end 15 recessed within the crim ed ends 13 of the wall and the ends 16 suita 1y bent inwardly and arran ed to seat themselves within the recess 8 o the needle and being of spring material will permit the insertion of the end 7 of the needle and retain .the member 10 in locked position upon said needle. (See Fig. 2.) To a ply my device upon the wearinga parel, tihe' needle 6 is assed or pressed t ough the cloth 17. (3 member 10 is then placed upon t e needle 6 by permittin the end 7 to pass through the recess 12 an between the ends 16 of the springs. To remove the same, the member ee Fi 3.) The- 10 is drawn or pulled from the needle 6. The lock ends 16 of the springs will relax sufli- 0183111715 to permit the same to pass over the en 7.
Having full described my invention, what I claim, and esire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described com rising a base, a needle formed upon said ase and provided with a recess formed at the rear of the point and extending around the entire periphery, a head member having a perf0ration formed therein for the insertion of the needle, a pair of leaf-springs riveted within the head, the free ends curved to receive the needle to lodge within the recess and retain the same in locked position, substantially-as specified.
2. A device 'of the class described comprising a base, a needle rigidly mounted within said base, said needle having a recess to the rear of the point 9 and extending around the entire, periphery, a head member having a perforation formed therein for the insertion of the needle, a pair of leaf-springs located within the head member, the ed es 13 of the perforation in said head member eing curved to hold the ends of the leaf-springs, said leafsprings bent inwardl so that the free ends come in contact wit the recess formed on the needle to hold the head member in position thereon, substantially as specified.
3. A stud or button comprising a'base 5, a needle 6 having a recess 8 and a point 9, in combination with a head 10 having a perforation 1 2 formed therein, a pair of leaf-s rings 14 secured to the inner surface of sai head by rivets, the edges 13 of the perforation in said head member bein curved inwardly, and crim ed over the en s of the leaf-springs to hold t e same in osition, said leaf-springs having their free en s bent inwardly to come in contact with the needle-point and lock the same in position, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
