EPPARATUS Fori Malone as..
Patented May 22, 190e.
Application filed November v8, 1905.; Serial No. 288.329.
To all whom/ it vnwy concern:
lBe it known that I, `LEON P. LOWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Making Gas, of whichthe following is a specification.
rihis invention relates to an improved apparatus for making gas, the object of the invention being to provide an apparatus for this purpose which shall be inexpensive in construction, simple in operation, and economical in the consumption of fuel yand. in repairs.
in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a broken front elevation ofthe apparatus. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, 1 representsa suitable casing lined` with refractory material 2 and divided into two compartments 3 by a Wall 4, extending from the bottom of the apparatus to a level near the top, said compartments thus communicatin withl each other at' the top over said Wa lThe two compartments 3 of the apparatus are identical in construction, each compartment being filled with regenerative material 45,l supporte upon arches 6, and being provided at the bottom with an opening 7, which may be used either as an inlet for admitting air or steam, the air being introduced, by arpipe 8,1controlled by a valve 9, and the steam by a pi e 10, controlled by a valve 11,'or`as an out et for the products of combustion, said Outlet to an upwardly-extending pipe-12, contro led by a valve 13 and discharging into a stack 14.'
i At the top of each compartment 3 `there is provided an inlet-pipey 15, throu h which 4.nfia'y be admitted loil injected y steam through a pipe 16. lFrom'i the bottom of each compartment leads a conduit- 17, controlled'by a valve 18, said conduits being con: nected to a common conduit 19, leading downwardly into a washer 20. i
I The operation of this apparatus is as follows: First, for the preliminary or heatingJ stage the steam-pipes 10 are closed on bot sides, the air-pipe 8 is'opened on the one side-as, for instance, the right-and 4closed fon the other, the left, the valve 13 is closed on the right and opened on the left, the valves 18 are both closed, and the oilipe 15 is ,opened on the right and closed on the left. Combustion having been started by any `oil insufficient quantity to make gas.l
suitable means, the oil admitted on the right is burned Vby the blast of air admitted at the bottom of the right-hand compartment, and the productsofcombustion are passed over the top of the Wall 4 anddown through the left-hand ,compartment and up through the stack on the left- After the regenerative material in the left-hand compartment has been sufliciently heated, the air and oil pipes are closed on the right and opened on the left and the valve 13 is closed on the left and o ened on the right Combustion now takes p ace in the opposite direction, the products of `combustion passing down through the compartment on the right and heating the regenerative material therein. This process is repeated two or three times until the regenerative material in both compartments' vbeen in t e direction from -right to left, the
oilpipe on the right is closed for a short time, au t e air-pipe on the the steam-pipe o cned. left is closed "an opened. The oilipe'on the right is now opened more Wide y than before to sup y e steam passing upA through the hi lily-heated regenerative material on the rig t becomes itself highlyheated, and therefore assists in vaporizing the oil admitted through the oil- .pipe at the to of the right-hand compartment. Said oi is also vaporized by the heat in the top vof the casing, and said oil-vapor .and steam, passing down through the hi lilyheated regenerative.. material in theleftand com artment, are decomposed and form fixed com ustible gases. These gases pass out through the pipe 17 -on the le t, the valve 18 beingopen, and thence into the washer 20, whencethey ass through the scrubbei's and purifiers in t e usual manner. After this process has continued for some time the temperature of the regenerative material in both compartments has been so reduced that the gas produced therefrom is 'too rich and the as-ma'ldng operation must now be re eated. *or this purpose the oil is shut 0H an steam alone is passed throughboth'compartments, so as to purge the compartments of gas, and then the steam is shut olf onthe right, the valve 18 is closed on the left, the valve 13 is o ened on the right, and air is admitted on t e left. Oil is now again admitted through right is shut o and he valve 13 on the the valve 18 on the left is 75 For this purpose,

the oil-pipeon the left. The air passing up through the highly-heated regenerative ma terial onthe le t becomes highly heated, and thus produces an economical combustion of the oil admitted at the top of the left-hand compartment. The' roducts of combustion pass down through t e highly-heated regenerative material in the right-hand compartment and heat the same, and when said reconstruction.
' vment, means for independently contro generative material vhas been suiiiciently heated the air is shut off on the left, the valve 13v on the right is closed, the valve 18 on the right is opened, and steam is introduced on the left-hand side. lThe process of making gas is now repeated in the opposite direction, the gas' so made passing by the conduit'on the right to the washer and thence t0 the scrubbers and purifiers.
By this apparatus the residual heat of the regenerative material is well utilized, first, to
one leading from thebottom of each com partment, controlled by individual valves, I am enabled to use a single washer in conjunction with the two compartments, thus rendering the whole apparatus economical in 1. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a suitably-lined casing having a central wall extending from the bottom of the casing to a level near but spaced from the top thereof and dividing the Vcasing into two compartments, communicatingwith each other over the top of said wall, regenerative material in each compartment,
an oil-supply pipe discharging direct into the chamber common to both compartments above the top of said wall, steam and air supply inlets at the bottom of each compartment an outlet for the products of combustion connected with the bottom of each comlzlrfg said inlets and outlets, and a conduit to carry olf the manufactured gas leading from the bottom of each compartment, substantially as described.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of a suitably-lined casing having a central wall extending from the bottom of the casing to a level near but spaced from the top thereof and dividing the casing into two compartments communicating with each other over the top of said Wall, regenerative material in the compartments, arranged in a continuous pile from the top to the bottom, an oil-supply pipe discharging direct into the chamber common to both compartments above the top of said wall, steam and air supply inlets at the bottom of each compartment, an outlet for the products of combustion connected with the bottom of each com artment, means for independently control ing said inlets and outlets, and a conduit to carry od the manufactured gas leading from the bottom of each compartment, substantially as described. y
3. In an apparatus of the character described, the 'combination of a suitably-lined casing having a central wall extending from the bottom of the casing to a level near but spaced-rr from the top thereof and dividing the casing into two compartments communicating with each other over the topl of'said wall, regenerative material in each compartment, an oil-supply pipe discharging direct into the chamber common to both compartments above the top of said wall, steam and air supply inlets at the bottom of each compartment, an 'outlet for the roducts of combus-A tion connected with the ottom of each comartment, lmeans for inde endently controling said inlets and outllats, a conduit to carr olf the manufactured gas leading from the ottom of each compartment, a common washer into which both of said .conduits lead,
and means for controllin the assage of the gas through either of sai con uits, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
L. P. Lows.
