Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1906.
Application filed June 24, 1905. Serial No. 266,795-
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD I-I. ENos, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Games, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in games, and refers particularly to a target game especially adapted for the amusement of children and which will be instructive as well as amusing.
The object of my invention is the provision of a game of the class described which can be simply and strongly made at a low cost and which will prove entertaining and instructive and will call for the development of a certain amount of skill.
With these and other objects in view my invention consists of a game comprising a box or casing, a flap forming an easel or target flexibly hinged in said box, so that when the said parts are extended and placed on edge they will form an easel and so support each other, a face imprinted on said flap, and apertures in the base of said flap adapted to receive marbles or other spherical objects.
Figure l is a front elevation of my improved game in position for playing, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. i
In the drawings, the letter A designates the bottom of a game-box which is of any convenient size and is of a depth sulficient to contain the marbles or other projectiles without interfering with the placing of the cover on the box. In the bottom of the box is adapted to fit the flap or board B, forming an easel or target portion and made of some stiff material, such as cardboard or wood, and this flap is flexibly hinged in the bottom of the box at the up er edge C by means of cloth or other flexib e material D. On this flap there is illustrated either by printing directly thereon or applying a label thereto the face E of any type-such as a man, fish, bird, or reptile-and which i sin this case the face of a man. This face may be grotesque or in any other form. In the lower part of the flap apertures F are out, which are sufiiciently large to admit of the easy entrance of the projectiles, and they may be regular in form, as shown, or of any irregular shape. These apertures are of such a shape as to conform to the outline of some part of the figure or face and when the face of a man is employed are usually cut, as shown, to conform to the space between the teeth of the upper jaw of the face for the purpose of forming a life-like target without disfiguring the features. Directly over the apertures numbers are placed which correspond to the value of the shot, and the value of these numbers is usually small in order that the score of the game may be easily kept and followed. From this description, taken in connection with the drawings, it will be readily seen that I provide a game which is amusing and instructive and may serve to amuse an indefinite number of people, and the game is so constructed that it is entirely inclosed in the same box and may thus be easily carried about and Without fear of losing the parts.
To play the game, the flap is drawn out at an angle so that it serves to help support the box, which is then placed on the floor or any other fiat surface, and marbles or other suitable projectiles are shot at the openin s either by means of the hand or a suitab e propelling mechanism.
At the top of the flap or easel portion may be placed the name of the game, which may be of any suitable nature.
I claim 1. The combination of two hinged mem bers, one of said members having its edges turned up forming a bottom portion to a box, the other member being flat and formed with cut-away portions in its lower edge.
2. The combination of two hinged members, one of said members having its edges turned up to form a box-bottom, the other member forming a target having apertures provided in its lower edge, said member having the representation of a face or figure imprinted thereon or secured thereto.
3. The combination of two hinged members, one of said members having upturned edges to form the bottom portion of a box, the other member having a face or figure thereon, and cut-away portions formed in the lower edge of said member and conforming to the outline of the figure or face.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD I-I. ENOS.
