Specification of Letters einem. Patented may 22, 190e.
Appiiiitu nel A111111?, 1905,. Serin Ne, 256.129.
l- To ttlv whom, it muy concern:
zen of the United Stat-es, and a. resident oil tles in which the f e main llat portion 4,-:1 cap Be itlniown that l, Enunrl). Giur, a citi- Detroit, in the county of Myne and State of Michigan, have invented i (new and use'lul Nhistle, ol; which the following: is e spcciiiczi tion.
My invention relates to that cla-ss of whise are under pressure, and the chamber within the bell is divided into e plurztlityol sound-'spaces by ineens of partitions,
the length oi. the sound-spaces being varied so thattlie single whistle produces s sound similer 'to that crested by a chime of whistles.
The objects oi' my iinproveniients `are to provide a whistle of' this kind with sn auxillary bell on the outside of the lower end of the Whistlebell for the purpose of lowering 4the musical note of the whistle, to provide e.
Whistle with a. bell-shaped Vguard thatshall `prevent dirt and mud from lying up and stopping thel operation ol the whistle when used' on the muller oli' automobiles, and to provide e whistle of this type that shall be u constructed et a minimum cost., l attain these objects by 'the con-struction illustrated in the accompanying dra-wings, in whicl f Figure 1 1s a central longitudinal cross-section of my preferred fornrof whistle. Fig. 2
VAis e. generalview of the saine. Fig. 3 is a view of tne bell. Fig. 4 is :t cross-section on the line 1 4 of Fig. 1. Fig. is zi vie-w of the lower end of the whistle shown in Fig. 2. 4Fig. is e cross-section of a inodi'lied torni, teken on a. line similar to that of Fig. 4. Fig.
.7 is a. view of the central stem oi the whistle.
Similar reference characters refer to like perts throughout the several views.
' The whistle shown in Figs. 1,- 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7, is built up' of only three pertsf-the lower cup-slieped auxiliary bell, the main bell, and the stem. The cup 1 -is provided with. a. ecrewthreaded end 2, to which-the ordinary whistle-valve or other connection may attach.' A portion 3 is flattened to provide for `engegement with a wrench. The stein has 5, a partition 6 to shorten one of the soumlrhambers, the
sound produced by the passa-ge ol" stesln, air, or gas through the saine when. sa id il uids irrtiouler type oi2 whistle to which my 11n- "proveniente are adapted is that in which the or disk 10,` formed on space betweenthe disk length of bell t to notes of maximum depth are obtained. The lower end of the stem screws into the cup 1. Between the cap 5 of the stem und the/cup the bell 8 is secured. This bell provided with two sound-openings 9, as shown. in Figs. 1., 3, and Ll. A round heed the stein, has e series of smell ,lugs 11, that lit against the inner well 1S of the bell 8 to position the same. The disk 10 is ol sufficiently less diameter then the bell to )ermit the necessary amount ol 'lluid to pass t irough to sound the whistle. A ,passage through the cup 1 connects with the passare-elli in the stein, and this in turn 1&1, and this with the 1U and the bell.
The width of the sound-openings 9 will vary with the pressure ol the ste-sm, air, or gas used. The connecting portion 15 between the upper'\end lower portions of the bell 8 may be of any desired width.
The stem just described is lat, and so divides the interior of the bell into two chambers. The stein nie-y, however, be shaped `with the cros'bessae'o withthree blades 17, es in Fig. 6,01 in any other desirable manner.
The cup 1 is of great value when the whistle is to be used on automobiles, es it prevents 'flying` mud and dirtiroin lodgingl in the space between the bell and the disk 10.H
Having now explained my improvements, what l chiiinv as niy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. ln a whistle, the combination of a lower portion, a stein screwed into the same and provided with en enlarged portion intermediate its ends, and cylinder' mounted on said stein, seid lower portion comprising e cup-shaped bell extending longitudinally upward beyond the lower end 'of the cylinder to inclose the seine.
. i2. In n whistle, the combination of :i stem, a cylindrical bell mounted on said stem'end ICO provided with sound-openings, -and a'lowcr shaped projection. which extends over the sound-openings in the bell.
3. In e Whistle, the-combination o1 u cups'haped lower portion; a. stem screwed into the same end provided with an enlar ed portion and a nep, and a' cylindrical be tting over the enlarged portion of the stemjand contacting with the bottom ofthe cup of the cup-shaped ortion, said bell het-lng a soundopening a latence from its lower edge.
4. ln e, whistle, the combination of a cylinder having sound-openings, a flat stem within the cylinder dividing its interior into two chambers, a. partition on said stem adapted' to limit the length of one of said chambers, the stem being provided With an opening to 'permit the airY in the space above-the partition' to vibrate in unison with the air in the other chamber, and a lower portion of the Whistle to support the stern.
5. In a whistle, the combination of tlie sound-opening a distance from its lower e ge,
and said stem having e. plurality of ha s on the enlarged ortion to position they ower end ofthe belli.)
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of `two subscribing Witnesses.
