WATER-TUBE BOlLlER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ara'ienteci. may 22,1906.-
Applieation filed January 1'7, 1906. Serial No. 296,463.
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVEs'roN T. EASTMAN, of Rockland, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in VVater- Tube Steam-Boilers; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention has reference to improvements in water-tube steam-boilers.
One object of the invention is to so construct a water-tube steam-boiler that water circulating toward the front of the boiler may return immediately after it reaches the forward point and without material vertical circulation.
Another object of the invention is to so construct a water-tube steam-boiler provided with sectional headers that a large supply of water may be furnished to the tubes connected with said headers.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel sectional header for water-tube boilers.
Other objects of the invention will hereinafter be more fully disclosed.
The invention consists in a water-circulating element for steam-boilers comprising the peculiar vertical header and two overlapping series of'tubes, respectively, for forward and rearward circulation connected with said header.
The invention also consists in the construc tion of the header.
The invention also consists in a steamboiler element comprising the peculiar vertical drum and a series of vertical sectional headers and two series of water-tubes connecting each of said headers with said drum.
The invention also consists in such other novel features of construction and combination of parts, as shall hereinafter be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of the improved boiler, taken on line 1 1, Fig. 2, illustrating a side elevation, parts of the same being broken away. Fig. 2 represents an end view of a series of the headers indicating the arrangement of the tube-openings therein. Fig. 3 represents a cross-sectional yiew taken on line 3 3, Fig. 1, the top wall of the boiler-casing being omitted to show the arrangement of the tubes, portions of the tubes and the side walls being broken away.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.
As shown in the drawings, 5 represents any ordinary lire-box or furnace having the front wall 6, furnished with the support 7, on which a series of headers may be supported in any usual manner, whereby said headers may yield to the expansion and contraction of the tubes connected therewith, as is well known in this class of boilers.
The particular headers 8 8, forming part of the present invention, are each furnished with two vertical series of tube-openings 9 and 10, which series overlap at the vertical central portion of the header, the openings at these overlapping portions of the series being preferably staggered, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The series of openings 9 of each header are inclined downward to correspond with the inclination of the series of tubes 11 connected therewith, while the series of openings 10 are inclined upwad to correspond with the inclination of the series of tubes 12 connected therewith.
Each boiler element has a vertical drum 13, suitably supported and having the drawoff pipe 14 and the steam-outlet 15. These drums are preferably formed with the truncated conical portions 16 and 17, connected by the neck 18, the rear ends of the tubes of all the vertical series 11 being connected with the conical portion 16, while the correspond ing ends of the tubes of the vertical series 12 are connected with the inverted conical portion 17. Where two or more units are used in each boiler, the upper and lower portions,
respectively, of the drums 13 are connected by pipes 19 and 20. Water being supplied to 5 the drum 13 will. fill all of the tubes 11 and 12 and the headers 8. If now the tubes are subjected to heat, circulation of water in the tubes 11 will take place toward the headers 8, and the water will circulate from said headers through the tubes 12, back to the conical portion 17 of the drum 13, and thence downward toward the tubes 11. As the lowermost tubes are subjected to the most intense heat, I prefer that the first return-tube of the series .12 should connect with the header 8 slightly above the opening 9, with which the second tube of the series 1.1 connects, where by a suficient supply of water is maintained to supply said first tube 12, the surplus water passing upward in the header. By reason of alternating the forward circulation-tubes 11 with the return-tubes 12 the water fed forward to the headers through the tubes 11 is immediately returned to the drum by the associated tubes 12, so that a constant and rapid circulation of water above the fire-box is provided. In order to insure the return of any surplus water or steam which may accumulate in the upper portions of the headers to the drum 13, I prefer to provide an addi tional tube in the series 12, and I prefer that the three upper tubes of each element should be return-tubes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A steam-boiler element comprising a single-compartment vertical header two series of tubes, respectively for feeding water to and from said header, connected in said header the return-tubes alternating with the feed-tubes.
2. A boiler element comprising a rear vertical drum having oppositely-inclined tubereceiving plates, tubes connected in said inclined surfaces overlapping at their forward ends, and a front header in which both of said series of tubes are connected.
3. A steam-boiler. element comprising a vertical header, a vertical series of forward feed-tubes connected in said header at one side the median line thereof, and a vertical series of return-tubes connected in said header at the other side of the median line of said header, the lowermost return-tube being con nected in the header at a point above the lowermost forward feed-tube.
4. The combinationwith a vertical drum having two conical portions the walls of which are inclined in opposite directions, tubes connected respectively in the conical walls and extending forward, and a vertical header in which said tubes are connected in two vertical series.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
