Letters Patent No. 82,123, dated September 15, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEMP-BRAKES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that LJOHN KAYE, of Louisville, in the county of Jeifersomand State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Hemp-Brake; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is a plan view,
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a hemp-brake with a number of heaters, which 'act successively on the hemp To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Between the sides of the frame of the machine is placed any desired number of beaters, which are pivoted, near their centres, to the frame A. Between the heaters B are placed short bars C, one end of which rests upon the end of the frame A, and the other upon a cross-piece, D, which is secured to the sides of the machine. In the lower ends of the heaters B are slots E, in which the crank works. There is the same number of cranks as heaters, and all radiate from the same centre, but each one at a diii'erent angle, and are journalledto the lower pieces of the frame A, as seen in fig. 1.
Motion is imparted to the cranks by means of gear-wheels G H I, and on the shaft of theintermediate gear H is a fly-wheel, J, as seen in fig. 2.
The operation of the machine is as follows:
The hemp is placed on the top of the bars 0, and under the upper ends of the heaters. Motion isimparted to the cranks F through the gear-wheels, and by the cranks to the heaters. By the peculiar arrangement of the cranks when in operation, the heaters strike the hemp successively, one after the other, by this means pre venting injury to the hemp, as is the case where two or more of the heaters strike together, and also doing the work much more eiiectually.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the cranks and heaters, when constructed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
JOHN KAYE.
