CLEANER FOR RIFLES AND SHOTGUNS- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1906.
Application filed June '7, 1905- Serial No. 264,049.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BASIL EDWARD SEY- MOUR STOCKER, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residin at Wellington, in the Colony of New Zealan ,have invented a new and useful Cleaner for Rifles and Shotguns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to an improved construction of appliance for use in cleaning the barrels of rifles, shotguns, and the like.
The appliance devised consists, essentially, of a length of thin flexible wire rope of sullicient rigidity to allow of it being pushed through the barrel of a rifle or shotgun, and which rope is attached to one end of a short metal bar, the other end of which carries a brush or a mop or an eye or other contrivance for holding patches or rags. The bar and rope must be slender enough to pass easily through the barrel of the rifle, and the rope shouldbe somewhat longer than the barrel.
Though the eye to carry the cleaning material should ordinarily be made in the short bar that terminates the wire rope, it is found more convenient in the case of a brush to interpose a few links of chain, and in the case of rifles with very sharp twists in the barrel a swivel may be added.
The bar is attached to the wire rope by inserting a soldered end of the rope within a hole formed in the end of the bar and the bottom of which is of greater diameter than the mouth. The strands of the wire are caused to expand within this hole and will be re tained therein by means of solder. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the cleaner. Fig. 2 is a view showing the cleaner as made with a brush. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale, illustrating the manner of attaching the wire rope to the short bar.
a is a length of thin flexible wire rope of sufficient rigidity to allow of it being pushed through a rifle-barrel and of a length somewhat greater than the length of the gun-barrel to be cleaned. A ferrule b, Fig. 1, is attached to one end of the wire rope. Its other end is fixed firmly to one end of a short bar 0.
This bar is slotted longitudinally, as at d, to
form an eye for holding a cleaning-rag or to provide for the attachment to the bar of a cleaning device.
The manner of attaching the bar 0 to the wire rope (I. is shown in detail in Fig. 3. A hole is bored in the end of the bar and the mouth of the hole is then drawn down, so as to make it of smaller diameter than the. hole and of equal diameter to the rope. The bore is partially filled with solder, and the end of the rope which has been soldered before cutting is inserted into the bore. Heat is applied until the solder filling melts and allows the rope to be pushed right into the bore. The heat is continued until the soldering on the rope melts. The strands of rope will then by their inherent resiliencv spring outward tothe sides of the bore. The cooling of the solder fixes the wires in that position, and the joint cannot be pulled apart cold.
A cleaning-brush may be connected to the bar 0. In Fig. 2 a circular brush a is shown connected to such bar by means of a few chain-links f. In case of a rifle with a very sharp twist a swivel may be interposed.
The flexible wire rope a will allow for the cleaner being pulled through the barrel, so as to clean it.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1; A cleaner for rifles and shotguns con sisting of a length of flexible wire rope which has sufficient rigidity to allow of it being pushed through the barrel of a rifle or shotgun, and to the end of which is rigidly attached a slotted bar adapted to pass freely through the barrel and to receive acleaning material, substantially as specified.
/ 2. A cleaner for rifles and shotguns consisting of a flexible wire rope which has sufficient rigidity to allow of its being pushed through the barrel of a rifle or shotgun, a slotted bar attached to the end of said rope and adapted to pass freely through the barrel and a brush or other cleaning device secured to the slotted bar by means of links, substantially as specified.
3. A cleaner for rifles and shotguns, consisting of a length of flexible wire rope, of sufficient rigidity to allow of it being pushed through the barrel of a rifle or shotgun, and In testimony whereof I have signed this a slotted bar attached to such rope by enspecification in the presence of tWo subscribagement of one end thereof into a bore ing Witnesses.
