SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 551,844, dated December 24, 1895.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FREDERIO P. BENEDICT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Gimps, Cords, or Lines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention involves a new method of forming an eye or loop on a gimp, cord, or line, or of securing an eye, loop, or hook, to a gimp, cord or line, and the object thereof is to provide a simple and effective method of accomplishing such a result, together with other advantages such as will hereinafter appear.

In the following specification the application of my invention is illustrated and described with reference to attachments for fishhooks, or the method of or means for securing such hooks to lines, and as will be seen it constitutes a simple and effective means for accomplishing the result by which the hook may be securely connected with the line in such manner as to render it impossible to remove the same therefrom without breaking the line or the hook,

The invention is fully disclose d in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which Figures 1 and 2 are elevation views showing my improvement applied in different forms, and Figs. 3, at and 5 are sectional views showing details of the construction.

In the practice of my invention I employ, as a means of connection between the ordinary hook and the line, a piece of gimp consisting of a strong thread of silk, woolen or cotton twist bound with fine metallic wire, preferably copper.

The connection between the gimp and the line proper, which is not shown, is made by means of an eye or loop B, composed of ahollow tube, preferably of copper, and in making this connection the end of the gimp is passed through the tube and the latter is then curved or formed into an eye, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and eye B, having an extension 0, as is also clearly shown in said figure.

, The tubular extension 0 of the eye B is secured to the gimp by clamping it, as shown at D in Figs. 1, 4 and 5, and this may be done by simply striking the extension with the properly-prepared tool or by clamping it by means of pliers or other clamping devices provided with corrugations or projections, as will be readily understood.

The hook E is secured to the gimp by means of a metal tube, formed preferably of copper,in one end of which the gimp is secured in the same manner as hereinbefore described with reference to its connection with the eye B, as clearly shown in Fig. 5.

The part G with which the hook is connected, as shown in Fig. 1, is a device well known in certain varieties of fishing and forms no part of my invention, and this is also true of the swivel attachment H shown in said figure, these parts being shown in connection with my improvement simply for the purpose of illustrating my application thereof.

When attached in the manner described it is absolutely impossible to remove the line from the gimp or the gimp from the hook without breaking either the hook or the gimp, as will be readily understood, and I thus accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and application, and at the same time comparatively inexpensive.

It will of course be understood that the method herein described may be applied in forming an eye on any rope, line or cord, or in securing an eye, loop or hook to such rope, line or cord, or an ordinary piano-wire may also be so treated or supplied with an eye, loop or hook.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An attachment for gimps or other cords or lines consisting of an eye, or loop or hook composed of a hollow tube through which one end of the gimp or other cord or line is passed, said eye, loop or hook being provided with an extension which is clamped or secured to the gimp or other cord or line, substantially as shown and described.

2. In an attachment for fish hooks or similar articles the combination of an eye or loop composed of a hollow tube through which one end of a gimp or cord is passed, said eye or 100p being provided with atubular extension which is clamped or otherwise secured to the gimp or cord and a hook secured to the other end of said gimp or cord by means of a metal tube in one end of which the hook is rigidly secured and in the other end of which the gimp or cord is clamped or secured, substantially as shown and described.

3. An attachment for securing a gimp, or other cord or snell, to a fishhook which @0111- prises a metallic tube secured upon the shank of said hook, and in which the gimp or cord is inserted, said tube being clinched upon said cord or gimp to grasp the same.
