VEGETABLE PARER. AlfPLIOATION FILED MAY 5, 1905.

VEGETABLE-PARER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 22, 1906.
Application filed May 5, 1905. Serial No. 258,959.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. J ETTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Vegetable- Parer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved construction of device for paring potatoes and similar vegetables, the object being to provide a cheap, simple, and efficient device by means of which the skin or outer covering of the vegetable can be quickly and easily removed therefrom without the use of a knife or other similar paring-tool operated by the hand.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In carryin out my invention I employ a box or case i, which is of a size convenient for arranging upon one end of a table or other suitable support, said box comprising the lower section A and the upper section A connected at their rear edges by means of the hinge A and fastened at their forward edges by means of a catch A The front of the upper section is made slop ing, as shown at A and an opening A is produced in the top of the upper section adjacent the forward end thereof. A horizontal shaft B is mounted in the upper section be tween the sides thereof and directly in line with the transverse opening A, and connected to this shaft B are a plurality of stiff brushes C, the fibers of said brushes being preferably made of steel, and it will be noted that all of the fibers of one brush are arranged in the same plane. It will also be noted that the fibers are of such a length as to project slightly through the transverse opening A, so as to come into contact with the potato or other vegetable held upon the top of the case directly over the said transverse opening, and by rapidly rotating the shaft B the par ing-brushes C are brought into contact with thevegetable and the skin is scraped therefrom, the said vegetable being manipulated by hand, so as to completely remove everyportion of the skin therefrom, said skin being carried down into the box or case, from which it can be emptied at any desired or convenient time.
For the purpose of rapidly rotating the shaft B, I arrange a pinion D upon the sh aft, which pinion meshes with a gear E, mounted upon a shaft F, journaled in the lower section. of the box, projecting through one side of the same, said projecting end being provided with a crank-arm G, to which the pitman H is connected, the lower end of said pitman being attached to a treadle I, arranged upon the floor and worked. by the foot of the person operating the machine.
It will thus be seen that I provide an exceedingly cheap, simple, and highly-efficient paring device.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
1. A device for paring vegetables comprising a box consisting of an upper section and lower section, the upper section having an opening in the top thereof, a shaft mounted in said upper section, said shaft having a plurality of paring-brushes connected thereto, said brushes being of a length to extend into the said opening in the top, and means for rotating the shaft carrying the brush, as set forth.
2. A device for paring vegetables comprising a box, consisting of an upper and lower section, the upper section having a transverse opening, in the top thereof, a shaft mounted in said upper section, and a plurality of paring-brushes connected to said shaft, the fibers of each brush being arranged in the same plane, said fibers being of such length as to extend into the transverse opening in the top, a pinion mounted on the shaft, a shaft journaled in the lower section of the box, a gear mounted upon said shaft and adapted to mesh with the pinion, the crank arm arranged upon the end of the shaft, the pitman connected thereto and the treadle connected to the pitman, all arranged and adapted to operate substantially as described.
WILLIAM F. JETTER.
