Be it known that I, ELMER L. BRILLHART, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ludington, Mason county, Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Land-Markers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in land or field markers, and has for its object the construction of a light and simply-constructed device adapted to mark simultaneously for a plurality of rows of plants and so constructed as to be readily adjustable to any desired width between rows.
A further object of the invention is to provide a marker which may be readily assembled for use and capable of being quickly knocked down and arranged in compact form for shipment or for storage when not in use.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and more fully pointed out and defined in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary rear elevation of the beam, showing one of the handles in section. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse section of the central leg-supporting sleeve. Fig. 5 is a top plan view of a modified form of marker embodying my invention. Fig. 6 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective detail of the same, and Fig. 7 is an enlarged transverse section illustrating the means for attaching the marker-teeth to the beam.
As shown in said drawings, referring first to Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, A represents a rigid bar or beam of any desired material, but which in the drawings is shown as a downwardly-open channel-bar which is graduated on its upper surface from the center toward each end in feet and inches to enable the marking legs or teeth to be adjusted forthe required width between rows. Slidably engaged on said beam A, as shown, are a lurality of rectangular sleeves B and B, eac having a central aperture therethrough to receive said beam and which, as shown more clearly in Fig. 4, are cored on their inner sides to provide bearing-shoulders b b adjacent the corners, against which said beam Specification of Letters Patent.

abuts, thereby affording a very firm yet small bearing-contact for the sleeves on the beam and permitting them to be easily adjusted thereto. Set-screws b extend through suit able apertures in the rear of said sleeves into engagement with the beam and act to hold said sleeves in adjusted position. Said sleeves, as shown, are provided with vertical apertures in the rear walls thereof, and engaged therein are the marking legs or teeth C, which, as shown, comprise metallic leafsprings apertured near their upper ends to receive said bolts b and are curved slightly forwardly to better engage the soil. Adjustably engaged upon the beam at equal distances from the center are two metallic thillclamps D D, adapted to afford attachment for the thills d d, of any desired material, conveniently of metallic pipe, such as gaspipe, which'extend rearwardly through said clamps and are turned upwardly and in wardly, affording handles d d. Said clamps, as shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, comprise upper and lower plates d (i provided on their inner or adjacent faces with parallel ribs d 01 adapted to receive the beam A therebetween, and the upper plate d is provided with an integral seat d adapted to receive the thill. A clamping-plate d, having a complemental seat therein, engages above the thill, and bolts (1 d pass through the corners of said plates at the outer sides of the beams and rigidly engage the thill to said beam. The central leg-sleeve B is provided on its front face with an apertured lug b affording attachment for the whifiletree B In the construction shown in Figs. 5 to 7, inclusive, the marker-legs E are adjustable longitudinally of the beam F, as before de scribed, and the beam F, as shown, comprises a graduated metallic tube provided on one side thereof with a longitudinal groove f, extending its entire length, which affords means for engaging the legs or teeth in operative relation upon the beam. Slidable on said beam are two metallic sleeves G, each provided on the front side thereof with an aperture adapted to receive the end of a thill g and on the rear side with a corresponding aperture to receive an inwardly-curved handle g. Said sleeves are provided on their inner sides with a rib or projection 9 adapted to engage in the seat or groove f in the beam F and acts to hold the beam from rotation therein. A set-screw 9 extends through each of said sleeves and rigidly engages the IIO same from longitudinal movement upon said bar. Said sleeves are positioned at equal distances from the center of the beam F and, if preferred, may be constructed of metal pipe, such as gas-pipe, to afford lightness and strength. The marking-legs E may be of any desired number and in the construction shown comprise each a resilient blade, which at its lower end is shaped to provide a suitable mark and at the upper end is bent in to afford a helical spring, the end of which passes around the beam F and is engaged in a sleeve EC Each of said sleeves E is adjustably engaged upon the beam F and is provided with an inwardly-directed rib e, which engages in said groove f in the beam F. The outer side of said sleeve is provided with an integral projection, which is slotted concentrically with the sleeve and through whichthe end of said leg or'tooth projects. A setscrew e is secured in said projection and passes through the end of the leg and bears against the beam F in said groove, acting to hold the sleeve E from movement. The central sleeve E, as shown, is provided with a link a or other desired means for attaching the whiffletree E The operation of my device is as follows:
The desired width between the rows being determined, the legs or teeth are adjusted on the beam to correspond therewith. The graduation on the beam in feet and inches enables this to be easily and accurately accomplished. Any of the sleeves B B or E, with its leg or tooth, may when the set-screw therefor is released be slid to any desired point on the beam and when adjusted is held by the set-screw from further movement, thus insuring uniformity in the width of the rows. Inasmuch as the sleeves B and B in Figs. 1 to 4 contact only with the beam A at the bearing-shoulders b, it is evident that they may be quickly and easily fitted to said beam and are adapted to move freely along the beam during adjustment. The thills d and the handles d being integral, they may be quickly adjusted to the desired width apart and securely held in place by the clamps D, thus affording a very rigid structure, which may be readily lifted by the operator. The legs or teeth shown are ordinary spring-harrow teeth, though obviously the teeth may be differently shaped and otherwise secured upon the beam than shown and may be of any desired or preferred form, and many details of construction may be varied without departing from the principles of my invention.
I claim as my invention 1. A field-marker comprising a beam graduated with a linear scale from its middle to its extremities, teeth adjustable longitudinally thereon, sleeves having seats therein adapted to detachably secure the teeth upon the beam at varying dlstances apart, means for attaching a draft animal to the beam and handles projecting rearwardly from each side of the center.
'2. A land-marker comprising, a graduated beam, adjustable means affording attachment for thills and handles and spring-teeth adjustably secured thereon and affording the marking means. I
3. A land-marker comprising a metallic beam, a graduated scale thereon extending from the center toward the extremities, slotted sleeves adjustably engaged on said beam, spring-teeth engaged in said slots, means adjustably engaged on the beam-at equal distances from the center adapted to secure thills and handles and thills and handles engaged therein.
4. A knockdown land-marker comprising a bar provided with a linear scale indicated thereon from the center to the extremities of the bar, sleeves engaged on said bar and each provided with an aperture at the rear of the bar, a leg engaged in the aperture in each sleeve, a set-screw passing therethrough and acting to lock the sleeve on the bar, thills and handles for said marker and means for adjustably engaging said thills and handles on the bar.
5. In a device of the class described the combination with a bar provided with a linear scale thereon of recessed sleeves adjustably engaged on said bar, a tooth engaged in the recess of each sleeve and means for adjustably engaging thills and handles on said bar.
6. In a device of the class described the combination with a beam of a linear scale thereon, sleeves adjustably engaged on said beam and provided with shoulders on their inner surfaces adapted to contact with the beam, a tooth engaged in a recess in each sleeve, a set-screw passing therethrough and engaging the beam, clamps adjustably engaged on the beam and thills and handles engaged in said clamps.

8. In a land-marker the combination with a channel-iron beam provided with a linear scale thereon of sleeves adjustably engaged on'said beam, bearing-shoulders on the inner side of said sleeves, a spring-tooth engaged in each sleeve, clamps adjustably engaged on said beam and thills and handles carried in said clamps.
9.
