In. :phonographs of the Edison type this spnng'issecured at its rear end to the carriaige andextends forwardly therefrom, and 1t equently happens that persons who are ignorant ofthepro e'r manipulation of the machine make use 0 the 'said spring for raising the carriage when it isdesired to change the' recordmn the mandrel.- In this way the s ring frequently becomes bent so that it' oes not properly hold the. feed-nut upon the I feed-screw. It'is. desirable, therefore, that means be provided for preventing such injury even though the spring be usedfor this purpose. It is also desirable that means be provided for adjusting the free end of the said spring in a downward'direction, so that any desired pressure of the feed-nut upon the screw may be obtained. With these ends in view In invention consists in the features hereina ter described and claimed. Reference is hereby rn ade to the accompahyin-g drawings, in which a Figure 1 is a plan view illustrating an embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation, partly in section, of the same.

In the drawings, '1 represents the main shaft of a phonograph, which is providedwith a feed-screw 2 of narrow pitch and carries the usual mandrel 3 for supporting the record.
