TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, ENooH S. FARScN, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Chamber-Commode; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section, and

Figure 2 a plane view of a commode, having my said improvement applied thereto, the lid or cover of the commode being raised or opened, and likeletters of reference indicating the same parts in the different figures.

The object of my improvement is to dispense with the removable seat-board heretofore required in a chamber-commode, and to afford or produce a cover or lid for the removable pot, which can be applied and removed, as occasion may from time to time require, with instant facility, and so that, when applied, it will close the vessel air-tight, and eii'ectnally prevent the escape of effluvia, and at the same time present a handle whereby the said pot can be readily lifted out of its case, and carried from the chamber, as occasion may render proper or desirable. l

My invention consists in the construction-and application, to the cover, of a spring-catch bar, in combination with an adjusting-handle, substantially as hereinafter described.

Referring to the drawings, A B is the case; C, the pot; D, the cover; E, the spring-catch bar ofthe cover, and F the adjusting handle of the same. v

The pot C is suspended by its rim upon a horizontal ledge, a', xed around on the inner side of the case A B, at about an inch and a half, more or less, below the upper end of the body oi' the case, and the inner portion ofthe upper end of the latter rounded off, as shown at b b', so as to adapt it for supporting the person while using the commode, without the intervention of the usual removable seat-board.

The inner edge of the upper side of the ledge a is raised, as shown in fig. 1, or a `groove made around in the said upper side, so as to leave an open space under the outer edge of the flange of the pot C, when the latter is resting upon the said ledge, for the purpose of allowing a free motion of the ends of the spring-catch har E, in attaching and detaching the lid. i

The cover D is a disk of sheet metal, raised a little from near its periphery toward its centre, to give it strength, and has sprung around its periphery, or otherwise secured to its under side, a thin band of vulcanized gum-elastic or other substance, which will, when the cover is applied, aiord an elastic packing between it and the upper side ofthe rim of the pot C, (see fig. I.)

The spring-catch bar E consists of a thin, narrow plate of spring-steel, bent so as to form an arch diametrically across the cover-disk D, when one end, e', ofthe said bar is riveted fast, near to one side-edge of the said disk, and the other' end held in place, near the opposite edge of the said disk, by means of a xed hasp or crossplate, e, on the disk, so as to allow the bar E to rise a little and slide freely under it. Each end of the bar E is widened or branched, (see iig. 2,) and these ends are bent under, so as to form short hooks which will catch. closely under the rim of the pot C, and hold the cover down tightly upon the latter, when the loose end of the bar is drawn inward, as will now be described` The drawing-in ofthe loose end of E is effected by means ofthe handle F, which, in this instance, is an oval loop of stiff wire, arranged transversely over themiddle of the spring-bar E, so that it can be easily vibrated or turned upward and downward alternately on the disk, (see the diagram, fig. This handle has a straight piece, f, of stiii" wire, Vtired from end to end of the loop, so as to cross closely under the spring-har E, when the said handle is turned down, as indicated by the red lines in the said diagram, tig. 3, thus allowing the loose end, e", ot' the spring-bar E to extend itself suliiciently beyond the edge of the disk D to allow its hook to pass down beside the outer edge of the rim of the pot C in applying the cover, whilst the hooks on the end e are grasping the opposite side-edge ofthe rim of the pot, as indicated by the said diagram ;V and so also, that when the handle F is turned upward to a vertical position, the crossing-wiref will lift or force upward the middle portion of the spring-bar E, and consequently throw the hooked end e of the bar E downward, and at the same time draw it inward, so that its hook will catch closely under the rim of the pot C, and thus securely and tightly close down the cover-disk D upon the rim of the pot, with the packing between; and the handle F: being now vertical, (see figs. 1 and 2,) the pot can be readily liftedA thereby out of its case B, and conveyed away without any risk of separating from the cover, or of allowing any eiiuvia. to escape at the joint.

This is a very'important improvement in the chamber-commode, in view of preserving healthfulness and purity of the atmosphere of the chamber in which it is placed, and the application of the spring-catch cover is qually appropriate for a. patois-chambre without a case. l

Having. thus fully described my improvement, what I claim as new therein of my invention, and-desire to secure by Letters Patent, is confined to the following, viz

I claim the spring-catch bar E, in combination with thecover D, pot (Land adjusting-handle F, the said spring-catch bar and handle being constructed` and arranged to operate together substantially as and for the 'Y purpose described.
