Description
J. E. MAYER.
No. 396,826. Jan 29, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN E. MAYER, OF BLAIR, IVISCONSIN,
MILK-PAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,826, dated January 29, 1889.
Application filed September 11, 1888. Serial No. 285,103. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN E. BIAYER, a citi- Zen of the United States, residin at Blair, in the county of 'lrempealeau and State of 'Wiscousin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Pails; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvemcnts in milk pails which are designed to be submerged in a trough or flowing stream, and which will exclude the water, while at the same time it will permit the heated air and the gases to escape from the milk. In this class of vessels, as is well known, the cover larger than the pail, and is supported on the same in such a manner as to form an annular space between the pail and the rim of said cover, which space forms the water seal. v
The improvement consists in the peculiar constructimi and combinatimi of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the aceoinpalrviugdrawings, and then specifically defined in the ap wnded claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, l igurc 1 is-a central vertical scci ionof a pail embodying my invention. Fig. '3 is a detail side view of the upper portion of the pail, Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section on the line .1 a: of Fi Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A represents the pail, of ordinary construction, which is provided. at its bottom with the vertical flange (I, which is perforated to permit the escape of the air when the pail is plunged in the water. The cover I has its rim of sufficient size to encircle the pail and have an annular space between the rim and pail. The ears 0 stand out from the pail and form a support for the cover, and have the ends of the bail D secured thereto. In order to obtain a broad purchase for the cover, to prevent its tip ping or rocking from side to side, the ears are provided with arms (Z (I, which are located about one inch apart, and are secured to the pail. These arms are formed by bending the ends of the strip from which the earis'formed at right angles. The portion (1, uniting the ends of the arms (I d, is deflected inward between its ends, and the bail is secured at its ends to the middle of the said portion (1 and is constructed to bear against the said portion with su'liicicnt pressure to support itself in a nearly vertical position, as will be readily understood.
In practice the cover is supported on the arms (I (Z of the ears in such, a manner that a space is left between the top of the pail and the cover and between the rim 1) and the pail for the escape of heated air and gases from the milk in the pail.
It is deemed especially important that the portion d, uniting the ends of the arms (Z (I of the ears, be deflected inward between its ends, so that the tail, which has its ends se cured to the middle of said portion, will always be held in a sul'istautially vertical position. The said portion (1, being deflected inward or curved, as shown, forms a sort of double cam-surface to arrest the motion of the bail in either direction.
lIavin g thus described my in vcntion, what I claim to be new is' l. The combination, with the pail, the cover, and the bail, of the ears having arms to support the cover and having the portion between and connecting the outer ends of the arms (IPHUOl'Od inward between its ends, substantially as described, and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the pail and the cover, of the ears secured to the pail and having formed integral therewith the arms (I d, secured to the pail, withv the horizontal portion (1 ,connecting said arms, curved upon its outer edge, as shown, and the bail having its ends secured to the middle of said portions (1, substantiall as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN E. MAYER.
