Specification of Letters Patent.
lPatentea May 1 5, 1.966.
Application filed June 26. 1905. Serial No. 267,073.
To all whom zit may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES BRAMMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guides and Supports for Pistons and Piston-Valves, of which the following is a specification containing a fnll,'. clear, and exact description, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
The various Oblcts of my invention are as follows: first, to lighten the working parts of engines and pumps; second, to do away with packing and packing-glands, vibrationcups, j unk-rings, springs on engines or valves which have extension piston-rods and, consequently, third, to dispense with all leaks in the front cylinder-head.
My invention may -be applied to piston valves as well as to pistons of engines or pumps.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a cylinder and piston having my invention applied thereto. a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
1 indicates the usual cylinder for containing the piston or piston-valve 2 and having at one end a common stufling-boz r 3. The piston 2 is securely fixed to one end of the piss ton rod eby any of the ordinary fastening devices. The said piston-rod 4 is provided with an axial bore 5, which opens upon the interior of the cylinder and within which is mounteda supportin -bar 6. Said supporting-bar 6 projects within the cylinder, and its outer end 7 is preferably squared or otherwise arranged to be engaged by acommon wrench. A screw-threaded conical enlargement '8 is formed on said supporting-bar at a oint near its outer end, and said tapered enl argenient is mounted within a threaded seat formed in the cylinder-head 9. Formed in the periphery of said supporting-bar 6 are a Series of grooves 10, which extend longitudinally thereof from the conical enlargement 8 to the inner end of the said bar.
The operation is as-follows: As the piston or pistou valve reci rocates within the cylin der its weight will e supported by the sup- )ortin bar 6. and all wear of thee. 'linder l a due to the weight of the piston or pistonvalve will be prevented.
The device is self-lubricating, as it will be lubricated by the lubricant which is sent into the cylinder for the purpose of lubricating the piston or p ston-valve.
Fig. 2 is.
The outer end of the supporting-bar is made square or angular in order that said bar maybe quickly removed after becoming worn and a new one substituted therefor.
The supporting-bars can be made' in large quantities of standard size,-especially for use 1 upon locomotives, in order to interchangeably Said supportin -harsfit all -.cylinder-heads. may, of course, be made to fit all the different sizes of pistons.
The grooves 1( permit the steam or other filll(l to escape from the bore 5 during operation, and thereby permit the piston-rod to work freely upon the supporting-bar.
I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown, as modifications may be made by skilled mechanicsjwithout departing from the scope of my invention.
' l/Vhat I claimisfor pistons and piston-valves, comprisin a supporting-bar fixed at one end to the cy in der-headandits opposite end projecting free; said supporting-bar havin a venting-groove and extending within a hollow piston and piston-rod.
2. The herein-described guide and support for pistons and piston-valves, comprisin a supporting-bar fixed at one end to the cylinder-head and projecting Within the cylinder,
in combination with a piston and piston-rod,fl
1., The herein-described guide andgsupport said supporting'bar having a screw-threaded conical enlargement near its outer end.
3. The herein-described guide and support for pistons and piston-valves, comprisin a supporting-bar fixed at one end to the cy inder-head and projecting within the cylinder,
' in combination with a piston and pistonrod,
said supporting-bar having escrow-threaded conical enlargement near its outer end; said piston-rod having an axial bore within which said supporting ar extends, the saidparts means for permitting the said supporting-bar to pass freely within the bore of the piston- In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing w! tnesses.
JAMES BRAM'MER.
