nois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattress or Cushion Coverings, of which the following is a specification. -My invention relates to improvements in mattress or cushion coverings or ticks,.and has for its object the construction of such a covering or tick which shall be rovided with edges independently of the tick-filling, whereby the manufacture of4 cushions, mattresses, and the like may be greatly simplified.

` A further object is to provide a portion of a cushion-cover that can be manufactured in large quantities at the least possibleeXpense.

These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the devices,

illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of a mattress provided with my improved covering; Fig. 2, a front elevation of Fig. 1and Fig. 3 an enlarged sectional view on the line 3 8 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.

Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A represents a Inattress or cushion 5 B, the top covering therefor, and B5 the bottom covering, C, the u holstered side strip,.

As shown in -F ig. 3, the upholstered or reinforced side strip C comprises an outer fabric E, an inner fabric F, and a filling G. The edges of the covering are preferably formed by folding the top and bottom with the side stri and securing the fabric in place, preferably by sewing. f

While in this construction I have shown a filling material secured between the inner and outer covering, it is obvious that the ini ner covering may, if desired, be of such a vss character as to afford of itself a sufficient stiffening- This side strip is further stiffened and the filling retained in place by a series of stitching which in the illustration are shown in horizontal parallel rows extending around the entire side.

In manufacturing coverings for cushions by the use of my improved reinforced'strip the side strip is madein any requiredlengt and, if desired, can be manufactured In long rolls.A The top and ybottom covers ,are secured to the side stri s, leaving one end open. In the bag so forme the mattress or cus on is slipped and the free end secured in place.

It wil speaking, a mattress-tick in the shape of a casing which is provided with upholstered vertical edges or sides, so that the mattress may be completed by the insertion into such upholstered ticking of a block of suitable filling material, such as the prepared block shown in my Patent No. 771,867, and closing the end into which the filling material has been inserted, thereby providing an attractive, finished, and complete mattress or cushion having suitably-upholstered edges, While at the same time eliminating the slow operation and skilled labor which is re uired in upholstering the edgeof a mattress in the usual manner by means of stitches which pass through the edge or sides of the mattress and engage-the filling material. Thus While such ticking may be filled in any suitable manner after it has been prepared my invention is most readily utilized by preparing the suitably-upholstered side strip whether with or without any intermediate filling, uniting the top and bottom of the tick by sewing the upholstered side stri thereto, inserting a thus be seen that I provide, broadly y prepared block of iil ing material, such as that shown in my Patent No. 771,867, and closing the tick, thereby providingk a complete, properly-prepared, and finished mattress, while entirely eliminating all 'handwork in the way of tufting, upholstering, &c.

By the use of my improved stri the cushion or mattress is made very muc stronger, and as the strips can be manufactured i n large quantities and used when desired it is much cheaper. A great deal of handwork in the manufacture of mattresses and cushions is also saved, as nearly all of the operations incident to its manufacture can be performed by the use of machinery.

While I have illustrated or described sev-. eral forms of my improvement,'I lam aware that other forms may be constructed Without departing from the s irit of my invention, the essential element o which is the provision of a cushion coveror ticking provided with an edge which is upholstered before the filling material is inserted therein.

I claim- 1. As a new article of manufacture, a mattress or cushion com rising a top, a bottom and a reinforced si e, comprising strips of fabric with filling material therebetween, the strifis and material being secured together.
