To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IRvING M. SYLvEsTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates particularly to cuffbuttons, more especially to what are commonly known as ball-end buttons. This type of button is provided with a hollow head, usually spherical or ellipsoidal in outline and usually plated with precious metal.
My invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figures 1, 2, and 3 are bottom, side, and central sectional elevations, respectively, of the ball or head of my button; Fig. 4, a side elevation of the upper portion of the bar Figs. 5 and 6, detail views of the sleeve; Fig. 7, a side elevation of a part of the bar equipped with the sleeve F ig. 8, a central sectional view of the completed head, showing a portion of the bar in elevation; and Fig. 9 a perspective view of a' complete button embodying my invention.

My new button comprises a hollow precious-metal or plated head A of preferably elliptical outline, provided upon its under wall with an opening or perforation a. The button-bar B has its upper end knurled, b, to insure against rotation after driving thereupon a ring, tube, or sleeve C. The upper end of the sleeve is flush with the end of the bar B, and its lower end forms, in conjunction with the bar, a shoulder c. By suitable tools bearing upon the shoulder c the sleeve C and the portion of the bar inclosed thereby are forced into the head A through the opening a until they contact with the opposite inner surface of the button-head, thereby locking the head against any tilting or other movement. The pressure of the tools upon the shoulder vc in introducing the sleeve into the button-head is suflicient to force the metal in the lower extremity of the sleeve C into driving contact with the adjacent metal of the button-head without destroying the exterior contour of the latter. The bar B is riveted in the usual manner to the base or second head D. It will be observed that not only is the completed button immovably fixed to the post, but no solder is employed in the structure.
It is evident that the cross-sectional form of the bar B, the sleeve O, and the opening a in the head A need not necessarily be that shown, but may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention, remaining within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim isl. In a button of the type set forth, the combination with the base, of a bar provided with a knurled upper end, a sleeve frictionally mounted upon the knurled end of the bar, and a hollow button-head provided with an opening in its lower wall, into which said sleeve is received and forced as a driving fit.
2. In a button of the type set forth, the
combination with a base, of a bar fixed thereto and provided with a knurled end, a sleeve mounted upon the knurled end of the bar` whose lower end forms a shoulder in conjunction with the bar, and a hollow button-head inclosing said sleeve and against the inner face of the outer Wall of which the inner end of said sleeve and bar engage, said head frictionally engaging said shoulder.
