IMPROVED SPICE-BOX.

fro ALL rEns'oNs.I To WH'oM PRESENTS SHALL' com:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. P ALM'ER, of the city of N orwich, of the county of New London, of the State ot' Connecticut, have invented a new landfuseful Improvement in. Spice-Boxes or Cans; and do hereby declare the same to be fully Adescribed in the followiug specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of
Figure 1 is'a verticai section of'a. spice-box or coni provided with my improvement.
Figure y2 is a top view of the can.- n n Figure '3 isa top v iew, and' l v Figure'4'a section of the' cap for the 'holes of discharge of the cover-end or head of the can.
)n June 23, 1868, LettersPatent ot the United States of America, for a spice-cnn, were granted to me. l My present invention involves the principle of that, and contains an important improvement or addition.
The shd canorbox is for the` purpose of holding spices or other articles or powdered matters, it being so formed that, by removal of the cap, the .spice'or powdered materiel may be shaken out through holes in the cover or head of the can.
The spice-box or can, 'as patented byme, was made not only with a 'series-'of perforatiops --or holes in its end or cover, butit had therein a cavity and a circumscrbing annular head, the said cavity being to receive a dat disk or plateyto serve as a. cap to the holes.
In carrying out my present improvement, I make the end or head of the cover with an annular groove surrounding the series of holes, and I make the cap or disk with' al corresponding annular bead, to `extend into and. 't to thesnid annular groove; or, what is the same, I make the end or cover with 'an annular bead, as in my patented can, and, in connection therewith, maire the cap or cover with an annular groove; to receive the said bead'. The capot' my patented can had no such heed, but was a perfectly-Hat disk.
In such drawings, A denotes the body of the box', and B the cover, the series pf holes of discharge being shown at a a, &c The circular or annular groove is seen at b b. The cap or disk, C, is represented as made with an annular bead, c c,.whose diameter and cross-section correspond with thoseofthe groove b, it being intended, when the cap is in place, that the head shall enter and completely fill the groove. An equivalent to the groove of the cover or end, and the annulanbead' in thecap, wouldl be the arrangementof the'bead on'thecover or end of the box, and the groove in the cap or-dislt.
The advantages of constructing the cap with either an annular bead'or a groove, to iit upon a corresponding groove or b ead, formed in or on the cover or end of the box, is that it renders the ca p stronger, insures a. better tit of it, operates much better to preventivaste `ot the spice or powdered` material when pnt upin the box, and
l while the box is in transit, andcanses the cap tolse held in place to much better advantage, particularly when the outer casing of paper isV pasted on the can.
My improvement also enables the cap to beisealed down, if necessary or desirable, by asealing of wax or other proper material or composition, Iintroduced into the groove.'
I therefore claim, in the spice-bex or can, as made with o. series of holes in itseover or end, or as havingv :a disk or cap to cover auch holes, the constructing both the cover or end or head of' the box and the disk, with :an annular groove infthe one, and a corresponding annular bend 'to project from the other, und to fit to or into such groove in manner substantially as described.
' 'CHARLES fr. PALMER.
