Description

No. 819,841. PATENTED MAY 8, 1906 J. P. BELL.

APPLICATION FILED DEC. 9, 1905.
M'Zvzesses, fizz/6 n50 7"; hwzes fiZrdBeM- QCQMWW' By 55$ Ffiorwey UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. JAMES FORD BELL, or MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA.
' A RT OF PRINTIITIG.
To allwhom/it may concern.- 7
Be it known that I,- JAMEs FOR-D BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Min- MlIlIlCSOtB, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Art of Printing,
of which t e following is a specification.
. My invention relates to the art of printing, and particularly. to the production of pic-.
1o tures in more than one co r.
The object of the invention is the improvement of the method of producing prints or pictures having opaque and transparent portions of different colors.
""' In carrying out m method or process I use as a print -su ace artially-transparent pa er or dlifier suitab e material, preferably w 'te, and print on its face in the ordi nary wa the portions of the picture that are intende to be visible when viewed by reflected light. The corresponding portions of the back of the sheet may either be printed at the same time or afterward stenciled with an opaque ink. or 'aint to revent the trans- 2 5 mission of light t 011 h t e'portions of the sheet thus rinted. then stencil or print with trans ucent color or colors the uncolored spaces on the back of the sheet. The icture produced by this method when viewed 0 y reflected light will show only its 'face', rint' and colors, with intervening spaces 0 the original color of the paper; but when viewed bf liglht transmitted through it will show a so t e colors that have been applied on the 3 5 back of such spaces.
In the accompanying drawing is shown a Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed December 9. 1905. Serial No. 291,080.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure b Letters Patent, is The met 0d of printing, which consists in printingonportions only of the face of partially-transparent material; printing or stenciling corres onding ortions of the back of the material to ren er them opaque; and lastly printing or stenciling with translucent color or colors the blank spaces intervening the opaque portions on the back of the material.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of this 29th day of November, 1905.
