Description

D. MAX.
Cloth Measure.
Patented Sept. 8, 1868.
Ina/9712?? N-PETERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPH-ER, WASHINGTON. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID MAX, OF NEWTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND THOMAS WALTZ, OF SAIME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTH-MEASURING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 81,921, dated September 8, 1868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID MAX, of Newton, in the county of Jasper and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cloth-Measuring Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cloth -measuring machines; and consists in the arrangement of an indicator provided with a scale, which is operated by rolls, through which the cloth is caused to pass, the said rollers being gaged to pass a given amount of cloth at each revolution; and it further consists in certain apparatus for passing the cloth through the measuring-rollers, as will be more fully described on reference to the drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved cloth-measuring apparatus; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section on the line a; w of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 a cross-section on the line 3 y of Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents the bed or platform of the machine, from which rise the posts 13 for supporting the bearings of the rolls. G is the measuringroller, carrying above it a presserroll, D. E is a bracket, projecting laterally from the vertical bearings of the measuringroll at one end of the same. G is a plate, secured to the outer end of the bracket E and to the post B, on which is fixed a circular scale.
On an extension, H, of the shaft of the measuring-roll a worm-wheel, I, is placed, which gears into the wheel F; working at right angles to the shaft H, between the bracket E and face-plate G, the axle of which is supported by the said bracket and faceplate, and which carries in front of the scale, on the face-plate G, an indicator, K.
L and L are the rolls for passing the cloth through the measuring-rolls. N is a frictionbrake, bearing on a grooved wheel on the roll L, for producing the necessary tension on the cloth. N N are similar brakes, applied to the roll L to prevent the cloth unwinding therefrom when it is released.
The rolls L and L are made of two parts, a a, as shown in the drawings, or may be made of two half-round portions, the part a being tapered at the ends. b b are metal bands, tapered to suit the taper of the part a.
When it is desired to wind a piece of cloth onto one of these rolls the end is inserted between the parts a and a and the metal bands slipped onto the same, whereby the cloth is clamped tightly between them.
To remove the roll, the ferrules or bands I) are slid off the ends of the clamping-piece a and the part a (the roller proper) or both parts withdrawn, the part a being, if necessary, tapered at one end to facilitate its withdrawal.
The roller 0, being formed of such a measurement on the circumference as to agree with any desired measurement of cloth, as one yard, meter, or aun, one revolution of the same will give a movement to the wheel F the distance of one tooth; and the scale may be divided into as many degrees as there are teeth in the wheel F, and each degree will indicate an amount of cloth passed by one revolution of the measuring-roll.
When the end of a piece of cloth is inserted between the rollers O and D, the pointer K is set at the starting-pointon the scale; and when the said cloth has passed through, the number on the scale opposite the pointer will be the number of yards, auns, or meters of cloth in the piece.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. The indicator consisting of the shaft H, worm I, spur-wheel F, pointer K, and annular index G, in combination with the rolls 0 D L L and friction-brakes N N, all arranged and operating substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with a cloth-measuring machine, substantially as herein described, the rolls L L, composed of the roll proper, a, and clamping-piece a, connected by means of the flaring ferrules or bands 11, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
DAVID MAX.
