Description
RACE & SMITH.
Cloth Measure.
' Patented Dec. 15,1868.,

X70/37d??? Y emu JOHN EDWIN RACE AND AARON SMITH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 811,903, dated December 15, 1868.
The' Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and maln'ng part of the same.
To whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, J OHN EDWIN RACE and AARON SMITH, of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Appmatus for Winding and Measuring Cloth; and we do declare that the following is a true and ac curate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters Of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a detached sectional view, from :t to a'.
The object of our invention is to obtain a machine that will roll the cloth or goods upon any required shaped roller-board Or form from the bolt or roll, and
at the same time measure and register the number of yards, or the fractional parts of the same, in its passage through the machine, and prevent any wrinkle of the goodsor unevenness while being rolled.
A represents the ame.
Surmounted upon, and attached to it, is roller-board I, secured in position by and between screw C and shaft F.
To the inner end of shaft F is rigidly secured plate F", provided with slot 2 and pointed screws 3.
Plate .J is sleeved .and shouldered to the inner end of screw C, between the screw and board or roller I, andl is provided with pointed screws 4, for securing the e'nd of the board or roller in its place.
j Bed-top B is provided with slot 8, to whichis attached guideslide .I, secured at the desired place by a setscrew or otherwise.
Triangular-shaped smoothing-frame L is hinged tO the bed at 5.
Hand-wheel E is rigidly secured to the outer end of screw D, and crank or winch Gis firmly secured to the outer end of shaft F.
Screw C is provided, at its outer end, with crank or winch H.
Bar R, with its ends bent at light angles, is slotted to receive screws or bolts, to secure' the same to the frame of the machine, and at or near the centre of the bar is connected pointer S.
Wheel N, by its journals, is boxed to the under side of bed B.
Upon the face of wheel N rests wheel M, which is provided with shaft O, boxed at Or near its ends to l standards U, which are rmly secured to the sides of the machine.
To the outer side of standard U" is attached a man drel, upon which is sleeved lregister cog-wheel Q, receiving motion from the one cog-pinion P, which is firmly secured to the outer end of shaft O.
The outer face of wheel Q is equally divided and figured.
Indicator 6 is firmly secured to the outer end Of the mandrel, with the extreme end of the pointer extend,- ing to and near the periphery of wheel Q. l I
Screw D being hollow, admits and encloses shaft F, the whole secured position by threaded box V, which is connected rmly vto the frame of the machine.
The operation is as follows:
The goods to be measured and wound are passed uponbed B, under smoothing-bars L, and between friction-wheels M and N, the end fastened to the board or roller I, which is secured in position between plates F and J, receiving motion through shaft F from crank or winch G.
lriangular` bars L, resting upon the goods, prevent the same from wrinkling while being'wound, and adjustable guide ,T directs the goods tothe desired location upon the roller or board.
The passage of the cloth between the friction-rollers M and N, gives motion to the one cog-pinion P, which meshes to and with wheel Q, thereby moving the same the width of one cog during one revolution of the wheel M, which is one yard in circumference, thus indicating, by indicator 6 upon the face of wheel Q, the revolutions of wheel M and number of yards passed through the machine.
The fractional figures upon the side of wheelMindicate the fractional parts of a yard, as itrmay appear by indicator S. By inserting the cloth with the i mark down, as shown in iig. l, it will be observed, as the same mark approaches and anives at indicator S, it gives the correct fractional part of the yard.
This apparatus is equally useful in measuring cordage, wire, or any other iiexible material.
What weclaim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y The cloth-measuring apparatus, 4consisting of the board or roller I, plates J F", screws C D, hand-wheel E, shaft F, Winches H G, wheels M N, pinion l?, wheel Q, bars L, and indicator S, when arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
