TIRE-BENDING AND SHRINKING MACHINE.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JACOB GETTEMY, of Donegal, in the county of lWestmoreland, and State vof Pennsylvania, have invented a new and improved Tire-Shrinking Machine; and I do hereby declare-that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and usb the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical longitudinal section 'of myimproved tireshrinker, the plane ofasection-being indicated by the line :e x, tig. 2. v

This invention relates to zin-adjustable tire-shrinker, which can be set to bendA the tires to fit different wheels, and which is so arranged that it willvv require but very little power'to bind tires of great strength and thickness. v
The invention consists in arranging three revolving drums, of which one is fitted in a stationary frame', while the other two are arranged in sliding frames on either side of the other roller. The .upper edges of the side rollers are higher than the lower ledgev of the central roller, and by moving the side rollers Aon inclined planes, this distanc'e may be varied at will. A metal bar, which is placed -upon the side rollers, and below the central roller, will, when the formerjare raised, and 'moveditowards the central roller, be bent, until it forms the necessary curve, which can be ascertained by an indicator-with which the device is provided.
A represents a frame of suitable-dimensions, and made of suitable material, of suliioient strength for sup= porting and holding the other parts 'of this Amachine. It consists of two side boards, aua, and end-pieces b b, which arejoined in any suitab'lfemanner. ,From theside boards project uprights e e,'in which bearings for a horizontal shaft, B, are arranged,'on which a corrugated roller is formed, as shown. In a vertical line below the roller B, and parallel with the same, is arranged in the frame A another Vhorizontal shaft'C, which has cranks, (or a crankwheel,) d, that are connected-by means of rods e e with frames D D. The cranks on the shaft C being exactly opposite to each other, and' of equal length,'and the bars e e being also ofiequal length,
the frames D D are alwaysheld in positions corresponding to each other,i as regards their distance from the I roller B, and as regards their level. The frames D D are fitted in inclined grooves ff, which are formed in the 1 sides of the frame A, asis clearly shown in tig. 1, said grooves being gradually higher, the nearer they are to the roller B. It will bel seen that by turning the shaft C, the frames D will be simultaneously moved towards or from the roller B, in the groovesf. A horizontal roller, E, is hung in each of the frames D, as shown. A ratchet-wheeler wheels, F, are mounted on the shaft C, and a pawl or pawls, G, are tted on another horizontal shaft, so as to be easily thrown into the wheels F; thereby the shaftC .will be prevented frdm turning .in that direction in which the rollers E would be moved apart. The shaft H is provided with Va crank or handle, g, by means of which the pawls G can be operated at pleasure. The .shaft C is also provided with a handle or crank, or is provided with some mechanism by which it can be turned in either direction. The vshaft 'B is also I provided with a crank or handle, to allow itrbeing turned.
The operation is simple, and as follows: The tire is placed upon one ofthe rollers Egand moved under the roller B. The latter is then turned, and, being corrugated, it lwill be able, to carry the tire forward until the A same rests upon bothr rollers E E, being depressed in the centre by thc roller B. Then the shaft C is turned in the direction indicatedby the arrow in iig. 1, whereby the rollers E will be movedvwith the frames D in the groovesf, towards the roller B, and will at the same time be raised, (on account of the inclined grooves thereby gradually bending ,the tire more and more. The pawls Gr alt the same time prevent the -tirc from` holding the rollers E E back,'or from pushing them back and down. When the tire has been sufficiently bent, it can be fed along between the rollers, and shrunk, while thus'fed, until finished. A hand or pointer, t', is secured to one end of the shaft C, and moves over a circular or semicircular dial, j, while the shaft is being turned. On the dial are marks, whichdenote the diameter of the circle formed by the tire while the parts are in any one position. The exact curve of the tire can thus be easily obtained.
' What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The device for operating the rollers E E, so that they may he moved in the desired direction, said device consisting of the 4`cra-nk'sheft C, in combination with the connecting-rods e e, sliding frames D D, and
grooves or gudesf, in frame A, all mede and operating substantially as heroin shown-end described.' 2. The devce'set forth in the foregoing claim, in combination with theindicatorz' on shaft C, the same being made as set forth. l 3. The'indicatingdevice z', in combination with the roller B, arranged as set forth. 4:. The roller B, when corrugated as set forth, in combination with the rollers E E, the latter travelling on inclined planes, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
