SHELDON E. JACKSON, OF WESTON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EPHRAIM B. LEE, OF WESTON, MICHIGAN.
WIRE FENCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Eatented May 1, 1906.
Application filed September 22,1904. Serial No. 225,492.
To all 707mm it may concern Be it known that I, SHELDON E. Jaoxsox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Weston, in the county of Lenawce and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful ire Fence, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to wire fences, and has for its object to provide a novel form of lock for connecting runner and stay wires at their point of crossing in a manner to secure a strong and durable connection between the fence-wires and to obtain a compact lock free from projections.
It is fin'thermore designed to form the look from a single piece of wire which is capable of being initially wrapped about the fence-wires and then subjected to the action of dies to clamp the lock-wire upon the fence in its completed condition.
Vith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the ac companying drawings, and mrticularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating a runner-wire and a stay-wire connected in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a rear view of Fig. 1.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in each and every figure of the drawings. I
The present fence is made up of runner and stay wires, as usual, one of the runners being indicated at 1, while 2 designates a stay crossing the runner at substantially right angles thereto and connected by means of the lock of the present invention, which is formed from a single length of wire. The middle portion 3 of the lock-wire extends obliquely or diagonally across the joint between the runner and the stay, with one portion 4 lapped beneath the runner and thence upwardly, as at 5, and diagonally across the other side of the stay in substantial parallelism with the intermediate portion-IS, the upper end of the wire being bent around the stay, as at 6, with its terinlnal inclined downwardly toward the runner. The other end portion of the lock is bent over the top of the runner, as at 7, and then bent downwardly across the front of the runner to the opposite side thereof in substantial parallelism with the portion 5, with its free extremity 9 bent or hooked around the rear side of the stay and directed toward the runner.
From the foregoin description it will be noted that the midd 0 portion of the lockwirc extends diagonally across the joint between the runner and stay in contact with the latter and is then looped in opposite directions across the front of the stay and the runner, whereby the latter is embraced at op posite sides of the stay in a snug and secure manner, while the extremities of the lockwire are hooked to the stay and inclined backwardly toward the runner, so as to avoid objectionable projections. This peculiar manner of bending the lock-bar produces two wraps diagonally across the front of the joint between the runner and the stay, with its wraps extending in opposite directions, one from the under side of the runner and the other from the upper side of the runner, while the intermediate single wrap 53 extends diagonally across the stay at the rear of the fence.
It will of course be understood that after the initial bending of the lock-wire around the stay and runner it is subjected to the action of dies, thereby to compress the lock snugly about the fence-wires and into compact form, with its extremities drawn into snug engagement with the stay-wire, so as to avoid projections. In subjecting the lockwire to the dies the runner and stay are of course bent or kinked, as at 10 and 11, respcctively, and the bends or coils of the lockwire snugly embrace the bent or kinkcd portions of the fence-wires, so as to prevent endwise looseness or play thereof, and hence secure a tight and durable joint at the point of crossing of the fence-wires.
While the present lock has been shown and described with its end portions looped around the stay-wire, it is equally effective with its ends looped about the line-wire, and I contemplate using both arrangements of the lock.
Having fully described the invention, what is claimed is A fence comprising crossed runner and stay wires and a lock-wire having its intermediate portion looped around the twO Wires at their point of intersection and en- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as gaging the crotches formed thereby, the termy own I have hereto afiiXed my signature 1o minalfs of ifzhe lock-Wire being lofiped around in the presence of two Witnesses. one 0 the ence-Wires at oints a ove and be- 5 low the intermediate 105p, a d terminating SHELDON JACKSON 0n the same side of the fen0e-Wire, and all of Witnesses: the loops being diagonally disposed relatively H.
