M. SETTBR. ELECTRIC RELAY.
. APPLICATION FILED 0GT.31, 1904 "PAW - MICHAEL snr'rnn, or on caoo; ILLINOIS, assienon TO Acron ms ELEc'rRio COMPANY, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
stscrsio RELAY.
No. emcee.
, citizen of the United States of America, and
a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inventeda certain new and useful Im rovement in Electric Relays, of which the ollowing is a specification. My invention relates to relays for use in connection with electrical circuits in general, but adapted more particular] for use in electrical si naling systems, ant adapted more especial y for use in telephone systems.
Generally stated, the object of my invention is the provision of an improved, simplified, and highly-efficient relay; and a special object is to provide an improved construction and arrangement of the armature relatively to the switch-springs or circuit opening and closing contacts; and another object is to pro vide improved means for inclosing the magnet and also forinclosing the switch s rings or contacts and the upper portion of t 1e armature; and it is'also an object,0f course, to prolocking-plate for holding the armature in' vide certain details and features of improvement tending to increase the general cfiicicncy and serviceability of a relay of this particular character.
To the foregoing and other useful ends my invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation oi a relay embodying the principles of my invention, certain portions thereof being shown in longitudinal section. Fig. 2 is a rear end view of the same. Fi 3 is a view of the forward end of the said may, a portion of the removable cover being shown broken awa' Fig. 4 is a pcrs cctive of the armature o the said relay. Big. 5 is a per spective of the forward end portion of the inagnet-shclh Fig. 6 is a perspective of the place. Fig. 7 is a pers motive of the forward end portion of the relay, showing the for 'ward portion of the removable coverbroken away.
As thus illustrated, my improved electric relay comprises an clcctromagnet A, provided, preferably, with terminals (1-, a", a and a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The mag net-shell B is preferably made from a sheetinctal blank or stamping. When folded into shape, the/said blank or stamping provides the shell with a'rear end wall I), the same havfipeciflcetionof Letters Patent. Application flied 0ctobcr 91 1904. Serial No. 280,767.

' in openings throu h which the said termina s reject. To this end wall the core of the e eotromagnet 1s secured by means of a screw a". Furthermore, the said blank or stamping is so folded as to rovide the shell with a flat top portion 6. This top ortion rejects slightly at the forward end 0 the reay, so as tMverhang the forward end of the magnet. The said overhan ing ortion of the magnet-shell'is provider Wit iia transverse slot oro ening b and is 'also provided at. its edge wit 1 a somewhat narrower opening b, leading inward to the'end of said transverse slot. In addition the'said overhanging end of the magnet-shell is provided with a threaded openin b, which is located 'just outside of the said s 0t. When properly folded, the said blank or stampin also provides the magnet-shell with curvell side portions 6 the lower edges of which meet at the bottom of the shell. (See Figs. 2 and 5.) The armature C is preferably disk-like in form, so as to practically close the forward end of the magnet-shell. As shown, the ar mature is provided with a threaded opening 0, adapted to receive an adjusting-screw c", the latter being locked in place by alock-nut c. In this way the distance between the armatu e and the core of the ma net can be adjusted to suit requirements: he said armature is also provided at its upper edge with a neck portion a having laterally-projecting lugs c. It will be seen that the said neck portion 0 is extended upwardly and thence rearwardly and horizontally to pro vide an operatin -arm c.
When adjusted in place, armature rest upon the to ofthe' shell at each end of the slot 5 1th the provision of the o ening b it is obvious that the neck of the saim armature can be easily insert ed edgewise into the said slot. When this has been done, the armatureis then held in place by the locking-plate D. This lockinglate is formed with an opening d and also s ioulder portions d, and in addition it is provided with a downwardly proiecting lip d. The screw (lPpasses through t 1 gages the threaded openin shell. When secured in p ace, the shoe ders d of the said locking-plate engage the lugs c,
the lo s a of the the forwan edge of the slot b. Normally the said armature is held away from the core while .the lip d extendsldownwardly against" e opening (2 and en- 72* in the ma nctupon the rear end 'ofthe magnet by means of a spring l3, provided at its end with a piece of insulation 6, adapted to bear upon-the arm 0 of the armreture. The said spring is a sWit ell-spring and is, together with the interposed strips of. insulation and the other two springs F and G, se-
' H ortion oi the lat .top' o f the'magnet-sheli. his can be accom p'hhed by inserting screws H through the said sprin s and strips of insulation and into the top oi the lliflIlGt-Sllfill. Normallv the springs E and G ngage each other, while the springs E and F are out of contact with each other. (See Fig. 1.) The said switchsprin s are provided, res )ectively, with ties: mine s e f, and g, Whic 1 project from the rear end of the relay struct re as a Whole. Thus constructed the switch-springs and the upper portion of the armature are protected by a removable cover I. This cover, it will be seen, is rovided with a lltlt top well i and an end We 5. and also with side walls i :1 tending downwardly and provided with lower curved portions '5 These curved port ions i are ada ted to fit upon the sides oi the insg net-she and thereby retain the cover in lace. (See Figs. 2 and 3.) The forward orizontal portion i of the said cover is provided with an'opening for the screw The operation is as follows: Normally the armature retains the position shown in Fig. 1, the springs E and G being in electrical contact with each other. However, soon as the magnet is energized by thepassage of electric current through its coils the armature is then attracted and drawn toward the end of the magnet-core. In thus responding to the ma netic influence of the magnet the armature ifts its arm a. This of course in turn lifts the forward end of the'spring l and thereb brings the said sprin into contactwith t e s ring F. This action it will be r readily un erstood, can be so regulated as to either permit the springs-E and U to remain in contact with each other or to break FOL" switch-springs or circuit opening and (liming contacts can be arranged and opcraied in accordance with the particular circuits be controlled.
A relay'of the lorcgoiln character is obvi 'ously sim lo and comparatively economical to manufacture. its *mrts are easily removed for re air or so sistution. Furthermore, with t 1e simple construction shmvn thereley is less liable to get out of order. The
armature is easily removed and widen rcmOVcd ermits the magnet to be easily r=- moved rom the forward end of the magnet shell. Also, asexplained', e singl'. blank stam ing is employed for melting the mag net-e 1e11, and this blank when i'olalcrl preyid'es both the armature-menting and tlhe inclosure for the magnet. In other Wdrds,
the blank when folded constitutes c. c ombined armature-mounting and n' agnehslmll. The armature itself can obviously be made from a single blanl: or stamping. This also true of the cover.
What, I claim as my invention is 1. A relay coin rising a magnet, a combined magnet-shell and armature-mounting iature suitably mounted on the said combined magnet-shell and armature-mounting, switch springs also carried by the said cornhined 'magnet shcll and armature mounting, the said armature being provided with an srrn for operating sale springs, and a removable sheet-rretal cover for said switchsprings and the arm of said armature.
